We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kay Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, thanks for joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage all my own social media because I know my brand better than anyone else…the voice, the vibe, the audience I’m speaking to. As a hairstylist and business owner, especially working with kids, I’ve found that personal connection through social media makes a real impact. I chose not to hire a team because I enjoy the creative control, and honestly, it saves me money while I’m still growing. It’s not always easy to stay consistent, especially when I’m juggling appointments, the salon, and everyday life , but showing up online has helped me build loyalty, grow my following, and attract clients who really align with my brand. I’ve learned that you don’t need perfect content, you just need real content. If you’re thinking about hiring someone, make sure they truly understand your brand, but if you can manage it yourself, even just at first….definitely do it. There’s power in your personal touch.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m the owner of Kay’s Hair House, a kid-friendly braid studio based in Independence, Missouri. I started braiding hair as a teen, and what began as a hustle quickly grew into a passion-driven business. I specialize in protective styles for children , such as braids, twists, beads, and all the creative touches little ones love and I also offer a membership program that helps parents stay consistent with their child’s hair care. One of the things I’m most proud of is launching Hair House Bonnets, a line of satin bonnets designed to protect children’s hairstyles while keeping them cute and comfortable. My brand is rooted in care, quality, and community. I don’t just do hair, I create an experience where kids feel confident and parents feel supported. What sets me apart is how personal it all is…I build real relationships with my clients, treat every child like family, and pour love into every style.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my reputation was built on consistency, professionalism, and genuine care for my clients and their children. From the start, I made it a priority to show up, not just physically, but with intention, kindness, and quality work every time. I treat each child like family, and parents notice that. Whether it’s being on time, communicating clearly, or creating a safe, welcoming environment in my salon, those small things add up. Word-of-mouth has been my biggest marketing tool, and that only happens when people trust you. My clients know I care about their time, their experience, and their baby’s hair and that’s what keeps them coming back.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has honestly been a mix of consistency, care, and community. I use social media to stay visible and showcase my work, but what keeps people coming is the experience. The love I pour into every child’s hair, the way I make both kids and parents feel seen, and the safe space I’ve created at Kay’s Hair House. A lot of my clients come from referrals, and that means the world to me because it shows people trust me. I treat every client like family, and I think that energy naturally attracts more of the right people. When folks feel good about who’s doing their child’s hair, they come back and they bring others with them!!
