We were lucky to catch up with Jill Sohayda recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Life is full of options to take a risk. Knowing which path can be difficult but if you never try, you will never know.
My first big risk was going to medical school. Initially, I had planned to go to graduate school to do research in biochemistry but after spending some time in a lab, I realized that being isolated in a room doing repetitive tests, and minimal interaction with other people, I needed to do something different. I started working at a hospital during undergrad and loved it. I decided to apply to medical school. Financially that was. a big gamble for me, but it worked out!
After opening my own medical spa, I have encountered numerous times that I have to take some risk – whether it was hiring the right person, buying the right equipment at the right time, moving the business, and so many more. I do think that taking time to really think through things, and listening to your instincts pays off. I remember listening to a podcast once where they talked about risk in starting a business. Their philosophy was start small and grow carefully. I think they were correct!
Jill, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My background is in primary care and my passion has always been prevention. Education it a powerful way to help my clients make some easy changes and minimize the need for medications.
That is why I offer:
Comprehensive wellness care, with a focus on hormones, nutrition, and skin health. We do this by evaluating each individual lifesstyle and passions, and reviewing sleep habits and stress factors so that together we can develop a plan that fits easily into their daily routine. And we have a large collaborative base of health and wellness providers to make sure we can cover all their needs.
Inner health is reflected in our overall skin health and appearance.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have always enjoyed preventative health care and education and believe that inner health is reflected in how we look and feel. After practicing in internal medicine for several year, I felt limited in what I could offer my clients due to limited appointment time during our visits and contraints based on what insurance would cover. I wanted to do more for more clients. I decided to open my own medical spa to provide wellness and skin care treatments, using my medical background to provide the most comprehensive care possible.
There is so much more I can offer my cleints now. I want them to understand the options they have and work as a team to decide what fits their lifestyle best!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I had no business background coming out of medical school so it was challenging but interesting when I opened my medical spa. I have learned so much over the past 15-20 years. There have been many ups and downs but it has been worth it!
