We recently connected with George Hage and have shared our conversation below.
George, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Any project were I get to stretch myself creatively and put as much of myself into the work is meaningful. I love when the person I’m working with is able to put their trust in me and sometimes even pull things out of me creatively that I wasn’t expecting. I’ve recently had a lot of fun exploring and pushing how I use clouds in my designs. I’ve been able to create some fun designs with Band Together for a special event shirt and backdrop and with Red Hat Amphitheater for their annual 2024 event poster, both featuring clouds prominently.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a self-taught, published artist and songwriter based in North Carolina, USA. I was obsessed with music and comic books at a young age, and I continue to try and infuse those passions into my writing, artwork and design. I’ve designed works for Bacardi, the Carolina Hurricanes, IBMA World of Bluegrass, Dreamville Festival, The Rink, No Depression magazine, and much more. When I’m not designing and illustrating, you can catch me writing and performing with my bandmates in Jack the Radio.
My band has shared the stage with The Avett Brothers, Hall & Oates, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, George Thorogood, Cold War Kids, Rayland Baxter, and American Aquarium to name a few. Our music has been featured in commercial, film, and TV projects including Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, Graceland, Beverly Hills 90210 as well as in sports programming for NASCAR, NFL, PGA among others.
I’m also an NC State alum who has toured Japan on In-N-Out Records, released a split EP with members of Coheed and Cambria, and appeared in the Marvel Comics Universe (Earth-616: Gambit #2).
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s being able to create something out of nothing. It’s being able to start with something that’s just an idea and then occasionally turn it into something tangible like a song, or a piece of visual art that allows me to connect with other people.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Get out to events and support the art you want to see. You can support by attending events, concerts, conventions. By following the artist on social media and sharing, commenting, liking their content, monetarily through purchasing tickets or merch, or by being a cheerleader for their work.
As artists we also need to connect, collaborate and create communities where we are to foster talent and inspire more art.
