We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelsey Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelsey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
As a photographer, I’ve learned that asking friends and family to support my business can be both rewarding and delicate. I genuinely appreciate their encouragement! whether it’s sharing my work, referring others, or booking a session, but I also believe it’s important not to assume they owe me their business. Support should come naturally, not from obligation. What’s appropriate is offering them the opportunity to engage with my work, not pressuring them into transactions. I once had a close friend who offered to pay my full rate without me asking, and it reminded me that true support respects the value of your work. On the flip side, I’ve had experiences where people expected heavy discounts or freebies simply because we’re close, which put me in uncomfortable positions. Over time, I’ve learned to draw the line by setting clear boundaries and treating my business professionally, even with those closest to me. That balance preserves both the integrity of my work and my personal relationships. I’m thankful for ANY support I get, as this is mainly a “word of mouth” business .

Kelsey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a stay-at-home mother of four who found a passion and a career in photography thanks to the encouragement of my sister-in-law. What began as a creative outlet quickly grew into a business that allows me to capture some of life’s most meaningful moments for others while giving me the freedom to be with my children at home. I specialize in graduations, weddings, and family portraits, focusing on creating a relaxed and genuine experience for my clients so their true personalities shine through. What sets my work apart is my ability to connect with people. Especially families and children, thanks to my experience as a mom. I understand how chaotic and beautiful life can be, and I aim to freeze those real, heartfelt moments in time. I’m most proud of the trust my clients place in me to capture milestones they’ll treasure forever. More than anything, I want potential clients to know that my work is personal! I care deeply about each session, and I approach every shoot with warmth, patience, and a commitment to quality.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I stay connected with the majority of my clients through social media, which has become a powerful tool for maintaining relationships and fostering brand loyalty. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook allow me to share recent work, behind-the-scenes moments, and personal updates that keep my audience engaged and invested in my journey. I make an effort to respond to comments and messages, celebrate milestones with returning clients, and show genuine appreciation for their continued support. By staying active and authentic online, I’ve been able to turn one-time sessions into lasting client relationships—many of whom return year after year for updated family portraits or refer their friends and loved ones. Social media has helped me build not just a client list, but a community.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a photographer is capturing moments that truly matter to people. Those fleeting expressions, quiet connections, and joyful milestones that deserve to be remembered. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about knowing that my work becomes part of someone’s legacy, hanging on their walls or tucked into albums they’ll share with future generations. I love seeing clients light up when they view their photos for the first time, realizing how beautiful and meaningful their everyday moments really are. As a creative, being able to freeze time in such a powerful and emotional way is not just a job..it’s an honor.
