We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Devoti recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of my most impactful projects has been my recent collaboration with a photographer friend to establish a Femme Creatives Meet Up. This event turned into the creative, inspiring networking opportunity I envisioned when I first entered the photography world. My journey began in 2015, in an industry largely dominated by men, with gear and styles that didn’t align with my vision or capabilities. It felt like a lengthy journey to build my confidence gradually and eventually develop a strong, supportive creative community during my college years. After graduating in 2021, I returned to my hometown, grappling with a familiar narrative while contemplating the best path forward. Through trial and error, I’ve fostered both community and confidence, motivating me to share this journey. Reflecting on this experience, I recognize how far I’ve progressed, witnessing a room filled with kind, eager creatives ready to collaborate. It feels like a full-circle moment to create and nurture the environments we desire for ourselves and for all those who share this dream.

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Sarah, a creative photographer with a signature dreaminess to my imagery. I capture in a soft but impactful way that evolves based on the person/brand/artist I am capturing. I provide a warm and bright energy that allows all my subjects and clients to feel comfortable and have fun being captured. I provide editorial style in an approachable way, proud to call my clients friends after. Proud to make work that is unique and blends inspiration with the moment, using my skills to capture any situation and feel confident in providing a beautiful polished result. My love for art and being creative is at the forefront of my offerings. These are photoshoots but always involve creative direction, the props, styling and details are crucial to our final result, I offer a full photoshoot experience.
I want people to see the genuine care and love come through in the work I do. I’m not here to be super salesy, waste your time or not put care into your session. I want you to love your photos, feel comfortable and have fun on our session, I want this to be a safe space where you feel like a baddie! This goes beyond photography into a healing experience, It’s a gift to provide for my clients and community.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is the creative journey. I am deeply committed to living a creative life, which entails fostering a positive community, nurturing myself, and producing work I can be proud of. This commitment has at times resulted in confusion, as there is certainly an advantage to having a specific vision. A clear path is easier to follow. My own path resembles a well-worn trail with forks and various directions. The greatest blessing lies in recognizing the flexibility this path offers; I once felt guilty for being able to exist this way. However, being creative involves finding peace and acknowledging the effort involved too. Creative energy operates on its own cycle, and my new goal is to be guided by my intuitive creative spark rather than by what I think will make money or what others desire.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Your reputation should be built on your authenticity. The struggle can come from being something that doesn’t feel genuine to who you are. Think first about what you want to be remembered for, how customers will walk away feeling, and what you wish people knew about you before you even meet. Lead from your heart, be genuine, and know that you chose to follow your craft to do it your way!
