Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Gee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taylor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
I started SheetLogic as a strategic side hustle while working a full-time corporate engineering job. For about a year, I built the business carefully, taking on automation projects during evenings and weekends, ensuring it was sustainable before making any major leaps. My goal wasn’t an immediate full-time business, but a flexible income stream that would eventually support my dream of traveling. When I was confident the business could support me, I left my corporate job and embarked on a van life journey across North America, continuing to serve clients while experiencing the ultimate professional freedom.
When COVID unexpectedly ended our travels and the hiring freeze eliminated my safety net of returning to engineering, I was forced to fully commit to SheetLogic. What had started as a flexible side business suddenly needed to become my primary income source. I strategically scaled by building a website, taking a branding course, offering structured video consultations, retainers and fixed-price packages instead of ad-hoc hourly work. Those early challenges of working on the road, managing client expectations with unreliable technology and proving my capabilities despite an unconventional work setup became my greatest strength. I transformed from a freelancer taking occasional jobs to a six-figure business owner, turning the very challenges that could have derailed me into the foundation of my success.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
SheetLogic is a business automation consulting service that helps small businesses reclaim their time by transforming repetitive tasks. The average company loses 20% – 30% of their revenue every year due to inefficiencies and I’m on a mission to change that. My specialty is taking repetitive tasks like data collection, tracking, quotes and reports and automating them with familiar, user-friendly tools like Excel, Google Sheets, PowerBI and Google Looker Studio.
My journey from corporate engineer to small business owner has a unique twist: I built my business while living and traveling in a van across North America. Unlike many in my field, I approach automation not only with technical engineering skills but also with a personable approach and perspective of someone who left corporate stability to lead a more intentional life. This background helps me see beyond just technical problems to the human impact of my work and helping fellow business owners reclaim time for what truly matters.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The majority of my clients come from Upwork and referrals. Upwork was a great launching pad for my business, connecting me with clients from around the world that I would have never been able to reach otherwise. The platform allowed me to showcase my expertise to international clients across diverse industries, breaking down geographical barriers and giving me opportunities I couldn’t have imagined when I first started.
However, client referrals have been the real game-changer for my business. By consistently delivering exceptional, personalized solutions and building genuine relationships, I’ve created a network of satisfied clients who actively recommend my services. These referrals not only bring in high-quality leads but also come with a built-in trust factor that makes the sales process much smoother.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
There were countless moments when returning to corporate stability seemed like the sensible choice, especially facing the skepticism from friends and family who questioned why I’d quit a secure engineering job to “live in a van and work online.” Running my business was particularly challenging during our time in Mexico, where solid internet connections were hard to come by. I was regularly working offline with no internet connection or cell service. I would build solutions and create deliverables completely disconnected, then frantically upload everything during brief windows of “civilization.”
There was one time in particular when my laptop died in a remote location with limited resources. I had multiple client deliverables due, no immediate way to replace the equipment, and was essentially cut off from my entire business lifeline. There were real conversations with my husband about whether this entrepreneurial travel journey was sustainable. What saved the business wasn’t just luck, but a combination of emergency savings, creative problem-solving, and an absolute commitment to delivering value for my clients no matter the obstacles.
