We recently connected with Valrie Alexander and have shared our conversation below.
Valrie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
The idea for Power Beauty Unlimited didn’t come from a business plan—it came from my own reflection. I started losing my hair at 15. I wasn’t diagnosed; like many others, I did my best to hide it. Growing up in a home full of long, beautiful hair, mine always felt like it wasn’t enough. My father, doing his best as a single parent, took me to get a Jerry curl, hoping it would help with manageability—but it only worsened things. Attending an all-white Catholic school made it even harder. I was different, and I was bullied for it. I carried the shame and confusion of hair loss in silence.
That pain became my purpose.
In 2019, I knew I had to do something. I envisioned a mobile beauty supply store that would bring Black-owned natural hair care products and real hair education, directly to my community. I wanted people to feel seen and informed. I began researching, outlining my business structure, sourcing products, and preparing for a 2020 launch. But then the pandemic hit. Just like that, everything I planned came to a halt.
Rather than stop, I pivoted. I began doing in-home consultations, meeting one-on-one with clients experiencing hair loss—especially those seeking cranial prosthetics. These intimate conversations showed me the deep emotional need for support in this space, and I realized I wanted to go beyond selling products. I wanted to specialize.
Over the next four years, I trained and certified myself. I became a Cranial Prosthetic Specialist, a Wig Designer, and most recently, a Clinical Trichologist. I built relationships, earned trust, and established myself as both a professional and an advocate. In 2023, I was awarded a grant to develop Power Beauty Unlimited’s headquarters on land I purchased—but that dream was delayed due to lack of follow-through and support. I pivoted again and accepted a leased space that allowed me to finally open my first brick-and-mortar location in 2025.
Every step of this journey, every delay, every pivot, was part of the process. From a young girl hiding her hair loss to a businesswoman creating a sanctuary for others, I built Power Beauty Unlimited out of experience, education, and pure resilience. And that’s why I can confidently say:
Power and Beauty Starts Within.
Valrie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I didn’t find this industry—this industry found me, through my own personal experience with hair loss. I began losing my hair at 15. I wasn’t diagnosed, and like many women, I did everything I could to hide it. Hair was such a significant part of identity in my household, and growing up with short, thinning hair in a space where long hair was the beauty standard made me feel like I didn’t belong. My father, raising me as a single parent for part of my life, did what he could taking me to stylists for help but the results often made things worse.
That quiet struggle carried into adulthood. In 2010, I earned my cosmetology license thinking that being in the beauty industry would help me find my place and help others. But being behind the chair didn’t feel like my purpose. I didn’t feel supported by other stylists, and I didn’t yet see where I fit. Still, I held onto a vision of helping people feel beautiful in their own skin, especially those dealing with hair loss.
The turning point came in 2022, I decided to build something for the people like me—those silently suffering with hair loss, confused, ashamed, and unsupported. I launched Power Beauty Unlimited with the intention to educate, provide access to culturally relevant products, and most of all, to offer empathy and solutions. I started with the idea of a mobile beauty supply business but pivoted during the pandemic and began offering in-home consultations, especially for women needing cranial prosthetics.
That’s when I knew I had found my space. So I committed to it fully. I invested in advanced education, became a Certified Cranial Prosthetic Specialist, a Wig Designer, and a Clinical Trichologist. I stepped into this industry not just as a professional but as someone who lived the experience and came back to serve others with compassion, skill, and purpose.
Power Beauty Unlimited is a full-service hair loss solutions provider. At our newly opened brick-and-mortar location, we offer private, supportive, and customized services for women, men, and children. From medical-grade wigs (cranial prostheses) to trichology based scalp treatments and non-surgical restoration solutions, we are here to empower clients through every stage of their hair journey. We also work with clients navigating hair loss due to medical conditions like alopecia, chemotherapy, lupus, thyroid issues, and more.
What sets us apart is our personal touch. I’ve lived this experience. I don’t just offer solutions ,I offer understanding. As a Certified Cranial Prosthetic Specialist, Wig Designer, and Clinical Trichologist, I combine lived experience with professional expertise. I also guide clients through the insurance reimbursement process for medically necessary prosthetics something many don’t realize they qualify for.
I’m most proud of turning what once made me feel powerless into a platform for empowerment. Power Beauty Unlimited isn’t just a brand; it’s a sanctuary for those looking to reclaim their beauty and confidence—on their own terms. I want people to know that they are not alone, and that healing, self-love, and transformation are possible.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has hands down been Google. While many businesses lean heavily on social media to drive traffic and engagement, I’ve found that my clients are searching for very specific, often urgent hair loss solutions and Google is where they’re looking.
From my Google Business Profile to optimized local search visibility and especially through my Google Ads, I’ve been able to connect with individuals who are actively seeking services like cranial prosthetics, trichology treatments, and custom wigs. These aren’t passive scrollers. They’re people ready to take action, and Google helps them find Power Beauty Unlimited right when they need it most.
This platform has been a game changer, especially for reaching clients who are navigating medical hair loss and are looking for real, professional support in a private, trusted space. Google not only brings them to me, it brings them with purpose.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding Power Beauty Unlimited was a journey of faith, strategy, and persistence. I started by using what I had my income tax refunds. Every year, instead of spending those funds elsewhere, I invested them directly into my business dreams. From purchasing supplies and education to paying for certifications and initial setup costs, those tax refunds became my seed money.
But I knew I would need more to grow the business into what I envisioned. So I began researching and applying for grants. It was time consuming and often discouraging, but I stayed committed. I was fortunate to receive several of the grants I applied for, and each one helped me take another step forward, whether it was upgrading equipment, expanding services, or improving my space to better serve my clients.
I did not come from a place of privilege or outside funding. I built this with intention, sacrifice, and determination. Every dollar was put to use with purpose, and every setback only pushed me to keep going. That financial foundation, though humble at first, helped me build a business rooted in service, healing, and empowerment.
