We were lucky to catch up with Jonathan Rodriguez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
The process of starting my residential pool business began with researching local neighborhoods to understand the demand for regular pool maintenance. I created a business plan focused on reliable, high-quality service for homeowners, set competitive pricing, and identified the most effective marketing strategies to reach local residents. After registering the business and securing the proper licenses and insurance, I invested in professional-grade cleaning equipment and completed training to ensure top-tier service. I then focused on building trust with homeowners through consistent communication, punctual service, and attention to detail, which helped grow the business through referrals and positive reviews.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
With over 7 years of experience working for a major pool company, I’ve built my business on discipline, hard work, and a true commitment to customer care. I take pride in delivering reliable, high-quality service and treating every pool like it’s my own.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Starting my own pool business didn’t happen overnight — it was built through discipline, sacrifice, and a lot of hard work. After spending 7 years working for a major pool company, I knew this was the industry I wanted to grow in. I had the experience and the drive — now I just needed the resources to make it happen.
To fund the business, I began saving money from my full-time job and picked up two extra jobs on the side. I also started driving for Uber on nights and weekends. Every dollar I earned went toward purchasing the tools, equipment, and eventually the work truck I needed to get started.
There were long days, late nights, and missed weekends, but I stayed focused on the goal: building a business where I could offer high-quality, dependable pool service to local homeowners — on my own terms.
Today, I take great pride in what I’ve built and in serving my community with the same dedication that got me here. Every pool I clean is a reminder of the journey — and the trust my customers place in me is something I never take for granted.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I set out to start my pool service business, I knew I couldn’t just rely on word of mouth — I had to get my name out there. With any spare time I had between jobs and long workdays, I focused on building my online presence from the ground up.
I taught myself how to create content, filmed videos of my work, and took photos of clean pools, filter repairs, and everything in between. I used those real, day-to-day moments to show people the quality of service I provide. Little by little, I started building a following on social media — not by showing off, but by showing up consistently and letting the work speak for itself.
At the same time, I built my business website from scratch, making it simple, clear, and easy for customers to reach me. I didn’t have a team behind me — just my phone, my tools, and a lot of determination.
Now, a big part of my growth has come from people finding me online and seeing the pride I take in every job. It wasn’t easy, but the time I invested in building that digital connection has been just as valuable as the time I spend poolside.
