Dee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

Heka remedies came into fruition from my desire to help other people embrace who they are. I struggled all my life with my mental health and it took me a while to accept that I have Bipolar disorder. It took a lot of self care for me to learn to love who I am, flaws and all and I want to help others to love themselves too. Dark Remedies is an extension of Heka Remedies and I created this because it’s important that we learn to love the darker parts of ourselves. It was because of struggles with my mental health that I was forced to find myself in the dark. One of the ways I accomplished this was through reading dark romance books. Although some of the themes can be triggering, I found myself relating to many of the characters in these stories and in the end it helped me cope with my mental health. I wanted to share that with other people too. Through self care and books we can learn to live in our light and find ourselves in the dark. That’s what Heka Remedies home of Dark Remedies is all about.\

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

If there is one thing I am most proud of, it’s my service in the Navy. I’ve met so many people, gone to many places, and experienced so much. The Navy taught me discipline, gave me structure, and taught me to stay motivated even through the toughest of times. Without all of those things, I wouldn’t be where I am at today.

My passion was to work in the medical field, so once my contract was up I went to school for respiratory therapy. I enjoyed working with patients and knew that I enjoyed helping others. But despite that passion, something was missing. I wanted to help others in a different way. I wanted to connect with people on a different level, and so Heka Remedies home of Dark Remedies was born!

What sets me apart from other businesses in this industry is my message behind each product. . Anyone can look up how to make a good candle, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, people want to invest in me, not just my business. When I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, learning to accept it was a huge challenge. I thought I was crazy and people would judge me. I thought my mental health was my weakness but it was actually my strength. I learned to love myself and I wanted that passion to reflect In my business. Heka/Dark Remedies is about encouraging others to love themselves, flaws and all, letting others know they are not alone in their struggles, and teaching others how to reconnect with who they are, both light and dark, and embrace self love.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.

I knew that I wanted to create products that were safe. I spent countless hours on the internet learning how to make these products.

I pride myself on my candles being clean burning and non toxic. I use 100% soy wax, fragrances that are infused with essential oils and are free of parabens and carcinogens. I hand make each and every jar, and hand pour each candle. They off course have a strong scent throw too!

My soaps and bath bombs are made with natural Ingredients and with fragrances that do not contain any phthalates and will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth!

Ive learned a lot of patience through making these products. It took a million tries before I found recipes that worked well and that customers were happy with.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

Word of mouth has definitely helped with growing my clientele. I am currently a vendor and the Little Italy Farmers Market in San Diego and I have so many repeat customers that bring their friends and family to purchase from me.

I have also worked with other small businesses. Mel who is the owner of Steamy Lit, home of the Steam Box was the first person to wholesale from me. I have worked with her a few times and through her I was able to reach others.

Also, sharing my story has helped tremendously. People want to invest in me, not just my business and being open and transparent with my mission has really helped me grow.
