We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johnny Britt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew that I wanted to be a professional musician in high school. I realized that I had natural ability in music. I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to study music in Paris, France and signed my first recording contract in Paris, France.
Johnny, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Johnny Britt I am a singer, trumpet player, songwriter, producer, radio show host and author. After having studied trumpet at the prestigious Conservatoire de Versailles just outside of Paris, France and mastering the French language I was discovered by Otis Williams founder of The Temptations upon my return to the United States. Which led me to become the youngest ever musical director for The Temptations and become the music producer for the Emmy Award Winning Temptations Mini Series Movie. This led me to becoming the music producer for The Little Richard Story directed by Robert Townsend. Upon moving to Los Angeles with my wife I formed a ground breaking group mixing hip hop, jazz and ole school funk the group was called Impromp2. We signed a record deal with Motown/ MoJazz record label in 1995. The group recorded 4 albums and in 2009 I decided to become a solo artist with my blend of smooth R&B, souful vocals and jazzy trumpet. My style is a mixture of Marvin Gaye and Miles Davis. This year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of my group Impromp2 and the 30th anniversary of me being a professional recording artist. My new 2025 album “Midnight In Paris” is French inspired. The album written, performed and produced by me captures the vision of my influences while living and studying in Paris … from the clubs, the language and culture they’re all felt on this album. This marks the first time that I’m doing some singing and spoken word in French. The album is a 12 song collection with the first contemporary jazz radio single “Midnight In Paris” hitting the Top 10 on the Billboard charts. My RnB single “Show You” is number 8 on the Indie Soul Charts where I just won for the second year in a row an “Indie Soul Award” for my song “Butterflies” for Best Duo Johnny Britt and Will Downing. Also this year for my song “Ocean Waves” for Best Contemporary Jazz Song. Recently released to Brazilian radio is my song “Cherie Je T’aime” which I wrote in Paris, France and is a hit single playing on 14 Brazilian radio stations. My new “Midnight In Paris” album marks the 7th studio album that I have released on J-Jams Records which is my own record label which is distributed worldwide by Sony/Orchard. I also wrote a book which is called “The Soloist” available on Amazon and JohnnyBritt.com it’s a biography of my life and journey through the music industry. The book was forwarded by Otis Williams of The Temptations with remarks from my childhood friend Arsenio Hall and the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Legend Little Anthony from Little Anthony & The Imperials. I think what sets me apart from most recording artist is the fact that I am a singer/ trumpeter and keyboard player which to my knowledge there are not that many … especially in the style of music that I am delivering with my songs and performances on stage. What I’m most proud of is my consistency in this business … that’s what my musician professional friends have told me. This one successful producer recently told me Johnny you’re putting out records like a rapper:) I’ve been told NO plenty of times in my career but just like my friend the great George Benson told me … he said “Johnny if you don’t believe in yourself nobody else will”. My brand is original and heartfelt. It ranges from sensitive to powerful vocals to intimate and lyrical trumpet playing. My songs are full of emotion and meaning while the production remains classy and totally authentic. Johnny Britt
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Yes. My big break in the music business was when I met Otis Williams of The Temptations. I was playing in a Top 40 band in Indiana. When I arrived at the resort we were playing I saw The Temptations name on the marquee. After my first music break with this Top 40 band I ran over to the main theater where The Temptations were performing. I knocked on the backstage door and this big security guard open it … I told him I’d like to talk to Otis Williams … he slammed the door in my face. After that I took a look into the theatre and the show had ended … the theatre was empty so I jumped onto the stage and started walking towards the green room. The first person I ran into was Otis Williams. I said hi Mr. Williams my name is Johnny Britt and I have some songs I think you might be interested in. He looked at me like I was crazy … then he said come to my room tomorrow at 7pm. I arrived the next day … he said what cha got. I played him my songs and the rest is history.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am my own boss. I can do whatever I want do to do. However I want to do it and whenever I want to do it. I’m in control.
