We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jake Bass a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jake, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have always believed in me since I expressed my interest in music. When I was eight, they gifted me my first drum set, and I was instantly captivated. My dad would introduce me to various instruments and teach me the basics of each. Once I had a solid foundation, we would select one for me to own and practice diligently until I mastered it. They never discouraged my passion for music; instead, they embraced it wholeheartedly.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up immersed in the music industry from a young age. My dad and uncle, professionally known as The Bass Brothers, opened their first recording studio on 8 Mile in 1993. Surrounded by music and musicians, I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in the music field.
It wasn’t until I was around thirteen that I began writing and producing my own music. Once I had mastered all my instruments, I was ready to combine them to create records.
To this day, I continue to write and record music. I now run the recording studio my dad and uncle established in 2004, F.B.T. Studios in Detroit. It has been an incredible dream come true.
I have the privilege of working with a diverse range of artists and exploring various genres. In 2020, I renovated the studio to create a musical haven and have been renting it out since 2023. I find immense joy in helping artists realize their visions and witnessing the profound impact of their music. My experience and guidance inspire them, giving me a sense of purpose.
In addition to my studio work, I joined D12 as a touring member, performing under the stage name “Dirty Jake.” It has been an absolute blast and a dream come true to travel the world and perform guitar for thousands of fans. This experience has been a full-circle moment, as I get to play the parts my dad wrote when I was a child. In fact, I was even present in the studio when they were recorded.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I’m not a fan. I prefer tangible things.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling aspect of being a creative for me is witnessing my work gain public recognition and inspiring others. Whether it’s through social media or live performances, there’s nothing quite like it.
