We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katie Holling a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Katie , appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

To be successful in any business or industry it takes more than just a good idea. It requires strategic thinking, dedication and the ability to adapt to challenges. In interior design specifically, it requires a combination of natural creativity, technical skills, strong interpersonal abilities and business acumen. As a designer, walking into a home or space and being able to visualize how it can be transformed is key. Bringing innovative ideas on how to execute that while understanding aesthetics and functionality. Then blending the two to create a beautiful well though out space. Working closely with skilled contractors to implement your design is key. Not only managing timelines and installations but also client expectations. Having an eye for detail and design trends but executing them in a way that is timeless and not “trendy”.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Since 2015 I’ve been dedicated to creating inspired, thoughtful spaces that reflect the unique personalities and lifestyles of my clients. Each project brings it’s own story and character, and I thrive on the challenge of helping each space reach it’s fullest potential. I truly believe that proper planning, clear communication and having fun along the way are essential for a successful design process.

My team and I offer everything from simple home styling- like adding decor to already furnished spaces-to full-service design, including selecting finishes for new builds, furnishing entire homes, and layering in those final, beautiful touches. Virtual design is also offered to reach and assist those out of city & state as well. We have a skilled team of contractors that bring our visions to life, offering custom built-ins, custom furniture, and full renovation services.

My passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces has inspired me to launch Holling Home Co., an online shop filled with curated decor and styling pieces. It will soon be live on our website under the Shop tab, giving everyone the opportunity to bring a little piece of our aesthetic into their own home.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

I started my business with no fancy investments, no outside funding, and no financial backing-just me, a passion for design, and a willingness to work hard. My family was integral in supporting me in the long hours, travel and time I spent working to grow the business. I took on small jobs at the beginning, using each opportunity as a stepping stone. With every project, I built trust, experience, and a portfolio. Instead of spending big, I saved what I earned and reinvested it back into the business-whether that meant better software, expanding services, or building a stronger team. Everything I’ve built has come from the ground up, one project at a time.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

Being a creative designer is incredibly rewarding. There’s nothing quite like seeing a client light up when they walk into a space that’s been thoughtfully designed just for them. It’s more than just aesthetics-it’s about creating a lasting impact on a home, making it feel inviting, beautiful and luxurious.

From full-service design to complete renovations, I find so much satisfaction in transforming spaces into something truly special. Every project is a chance to be creative, to problem-solve, and to curate pieces that bring both function and beauty into a home.
