Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maya Mendoza. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my brand is a spin off of my name. My business is called My Joy Cookie Co. My name is Maya Joy. My mother gave me the nickname My Joy, because she loved the Anita Baker song, “You bring me joy”. Cookies definitely bring me joy so that’s how I came up with my brand name.

Maya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
During Covid, I had a lot of time to think about my future and how to create another source of income.
I wanted to do something I was good at and knew would sell well. I loved to bake. I love chocolate and wanted to do something different than cakes. Crumbl wasn’t a trending thing at the time, and you didn’t see many Cookie Companies in the area.
So I went with cookies! I thought of a brand name, and what I wanted my cookies to look like. The end goal was to have a mobile Food Truck or trailer and that’s the direction that I’m heading in.
My business began to flourish and my name got out and I was able to purchase a food Trailer.
The trailer hasn’t made it to the streets yet but hopefully by the summer it will be in full operation and serving the community.
I want people to see my trailer and know they’re getting a different vibe and experience than Crumbl or Insomnia Cookies. It’s authentic and local.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I gave out free samples and people loved my cookies. I had them try new flavors I wanted to introduce and asked for their opinions. Doing that helped grow my clientele.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Yes, I have a website. It’s through Ecwid. When I created a business banking account PNC introduced me to the web builder.
I personally like Ecwid, they have an app and a desktop version to help upscale your business.
Pros: I like that it’s easy to navigate and use when you have no idea on how to design a website.
Its affordable! You can tailor your plan based on your business needs.
Cons: Considering it’s a newer E-commerce, there are things that it doesn’t offer that Shopify does. Such as a better built in sales feature and templates to choose from.
