We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Symiah Saulsberry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Symiah below.
Symiah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I had the chance to start over, there are a few things I would do differently—starting with believing in myself and my business much sooner. Unlike the path many parents encourage—getting a college degree—I’ve learned that it’s not essential for every field. In mine, it wasn’t. If I knew then what I know now, I would’ve launched my business and started marketing right out of high school. I also would’ve invested time in studying different markets and used my resources to travel and explore cities to find the best location for growth and success for the services I provide.
Symiah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Symiah Saulsberry, also known as Miah. I am a custom apparel designer and a bridal and formalwear alterations specialist, originally from Memphis, TN. In 2021, I relocated to Savannah, Georgia, where I’ve been building my business ever since.
My passion for fashion design started at the age of fourteen. Over time, that passion blossomed into a full-time career. I’ve always known that fashion was more than just fabric and stitches for me—it was a way to help others feel confident, beautiful, and seen, especially on life’s most important days.
What sets me apart is the level of care, precision, and expertise I bring to every project. I understand the emotional weight of weddings and formal events, and I approach each garment as if it were for my big day. My clients trust me not only for my technical skill but also for the personal, supportive experience I strive to create during what can often times can be a stressful process.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the role I’ve played in making my brides’ big days unforgettable. The relationships I’ve built with my clients and the joy on their faces when they see their gowns perfectly altered for them motivates me every day.
For potential clients, I would want them to know that their comfort, confidence, and vision are most important to me. Whether you’re walking down the aisle, attending a milestone event, or simply want a garment to feel like it was made just for you, I’m here to make sure you look and feel your absolute best.
Aside from alterations, giving back is another big part of my mission. As a former student who understands the financial challenges of pursuing the arts, I’ve created scholarship opportunities for high school seniors in Savannah who plan to study creative fields. I also host annual fashion shows for emerging artists to showcase their work early in their creative careers. Supporting the next generation of artists means everything to me, and I will continue to create outlets for them to express themselves.
Have you ever had to pivot?
For me, everything changed during my junior year of college when I made the decision to drop out. I was mentally drained and overwhelmed. Deep down, I knew what was right for me freshman year, but I hesitated out of fear, worried about what others would think about my choice. Ultimately, I trusted myself and went for it. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
At just 22, I own a fully operational and highly profitable business, have a place of my own, and two sweet fur babies. I truly believe that the only person who ever holds us back is ourselves. Now, I catch myself wondering—why didn’t I do it sooner?!
Today, I’m working toward getting my real estate license and preparing to purchase my first commercial building. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth it.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of clients for me has been word of mouth, and having my business listed on Google has been the most beneficial marketing tool. Ironically, I’ve never paid for advertising, and I honestly haven’t had a need to. Once I worked with my first few clients, the word quickly spread. Before I knew it, I was honored as a Best of Georgia Winner for alterations, and my business has been thriving ever since.
If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone looking to attract new clients, it would be this: focus on creating an exceptional experience for every client. A happy client is your best advertisement. And don’t forget to ask for reviews—positive feedback goes a long way and builds lasting credibility.
