We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Hope Reyes PT, DPT. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Hope below.
Dr. Hope , appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I started my business after working locally as a pediatric physical therapist in San Diego for 7 years. Once I started my business, I began to collaborate with other like-minded providers in the area. I began collaborating with Karyn Johnson-Fernandez MS, OTR/L, SWC. Karyn started her practice around the same time after working in the field for 12 years. We began to dream big about our future businesses making a difference in children’s life throughout San Diego County.
Providing services for children requires a collaborative approach to make sure the child is making the very best improvement with all the necessary intervention. In our businesses, we help babies to be successful with breastfeeding and bottle feeding through physical therapy and occupational therapy services. Karyn and I realized early on that meeting other providers in the area and collaborating with them is the key to both our success and the child’s success.
We enjoy meeting and working closely with providers such as pediatric dentists, lactation, chiropractic, craniosacral therapy, birth providers, and speech therapy as all these wonderful providers are each a piece of the puzzle.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Dr. Hope Reyes PT, DPT and I became a pediatric physical therapist after teaching dance as a young teen. I have always has an interest in biomechanics and how the human body functions. This led me to complete my doctorate in physical therapy in 2013. I began working in outpatient pediatrics setting and realized I wanted to start my own practice focusing in infants and young children. My passion is to make sure that parents feel empowered to help their child grow and thrive in the first year of life. Helping children starts with helping the parents learn and understand their child’s abilities.
Hi, my name is Karyn (Car-in) and I have been a pediatric occupational therapist since 2010. In working with many families over the years, I have realized two things; one, that eating and family meal time is a huge part of our daily lives which creates connection to those around us, and two, as a mom of a picky eater, my love for exploring, enjoying, and sharing a balance of tasty and nutritious food and meal times continues to grow. These two areas combined led me to specialize in feeding therapy, in order to help families feel more comfortable, connected, and successful with meal time in their home and the community.
Together, Karyn and Dr. Hope have created San Diego’s first Comprehensive and Collaborative Tongue Tie Therapy. A one-stop shop to help babies and families prepare and recover from a tongue frenectomy. The mission of this collaboration is for the baby to foster ideal motor development and to feed safely and efficiently.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most helpful aspect that Karyn and Dr. Hope have adopted is the collaboration with other highly skilled providers. Collaboration leads to both increased knowledge and a holistic approach to treatment for the child and family.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
We consider ourselves highly skilled practitioners. However, the resilience that we witness on a daily basis is shown in efforts put forth by the parents and progress of their child.
