Emme Diane, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
• As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that, can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m Emme Diane Burg, founder and CEO of Emme Diane. My passion for solving tough skin issues started with my own struggles with problematic skin. I know firsthand how frustrating and defeating it can feel when nothing seems to work, and that experience sparked what has become a 20+ year journey in both medical and spa esthetics.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work with clients from all over the world who come to me when they feel like they’ve tried everything. My focus has always been on correcting some of the most challenging skin concerns like acne, melasma, sun damage, and premature aging.
What I discovered early on was that many popular skincare lines were actually full of ingredients that were making these issues worse. That realization pushed me to dig deep into ingredient research and formulation. I became determined to change the way skincare was done and to create products that could deliver real, lasting results. That’s how Emme Diane skincare was born, through equal parts passion, persistence, and a genuine desire to help others finally achieve the skin they’ve been dreaming of.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
People can tell when you really care. We love our clients and are constantly offering more and more free resources to help guide them on their skincare journey – from acne-safe shopping lists (we regularly and painstakingly comb through ingredient lists of makeup and products sold in stores – a big task for my team) to regularly posting educational content so they have the information needed to become their own skincare expert. Provide value beyond the products and services you offer, and you’ll see your clientele grow – as well as an increase in your return customer rate. Don’t forget the value of your current clients!

There was a turning point at the start of my career – a conversation with a mentor – where I learned more about acne than I did in esthetics school and the reason why most people continued to struggle with their skin was due to formulary issues. I felt really out of integrity with the products I could offer my clients since, after discovering the truth, I knew those products would not ultimately work (they weren’t working on me either!) So at that point, I had no choice but to “do it myself.” This mentor connected me with my first cosmetic chemist where I formulated my first product, Clarifying Serum, which is a product that remains a staple for my clients today. Creating that formula was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, especially given my commitment to staying debt-free and maintaining full ownership of my company. Plus, my focus on creating 100% acne-safe products meant navigating numerous challenges with ingredient selection and formula stability. Looking back on it, I’m not sure I would have it in me to do it all over again. But luckily I stuck with it . I continued to create new formulas slowly but surely as I was able to, and it became a bit easier each time.
