We were lucky to catch up with Dedric Byrd recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dedric, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My Mother is my hero for a number of reasons. She showed me how to work hard and approach each obstacle with a “I can do it” mentality. She has showed me the importance to work, save, and find a balance. Even though I wear several different hates I do my best to take time to rest, or as she says “stop and smell the roses”. A quick story to share is how my mother was able to work 3 jobs, attend school part-time and take care of 4 children. Watching her daily commitment to her family and improving her situation made me focus once I got to the opportunity to work and build my businesses.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello all! My name is Dedric Byrd, a Graduate of the University of Mount Olive. I am a 3rd year Teacher at Garner Magnet High School, where I am the head coach of 2 sports (Women’s Lacrosse 2 seasons, and Women’s Flag Football). I am also the Advisor for the Interact club as well as apart of the MTAC Committee. Outside of school I referee 3 HS sports (volleyball-1 year, basketball- 7 years, and boys lacrosse- 5 years), I have a Djing business (Djing for 5 years) that specializes in private events and Weddings, I am an ordained minister/officiant (3 years), Notary Public (3 years), and Hold my CDL. I love to learn new things which is why I have worked hard to add a plethora of tools to my “tool kit”. In everything that I do, my mission is to leave things better than I found them, as well as, truly giving my best to my clients and Students. The thing that I am most proud of is a number of my clients come from word of mouth, which I like to believe there is are a lot of positivity around the business,
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
While in college I was hurt multiple times while playing college basketball. Both of my injuries required me to sit out for over a year in order to return to play. There were an number of ups and downs that I had to deal with, including having to learn how to walk and run gain. There were a number of days where I could have chosen to give up or just not go hard, but with God and the support of family and friends I was able to return to playing and ultimately graduate. This by far was the biggest challenge I ever faced, and without it I don’t think I would be the person I am today. The reason I say that us because it humbled me in which it forced me to take better care of myself, but also it strengthened my resilience and dedication.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think my personality, productiveness, and professionalism has lead to my reputation being what it is today. I realize that you can’t please everyone and people may not like how you do things, but there are things that you can control to make the experience enjoyable. I’ve observed the market, read comments that people left for competitors and used that to build my business. This has allowed me to foreshadow certain complaints I may run into and helped me understand what experience people may want. Today, I am working on social media marketing and other ways to get more attention on my business, and further grow my clientele in oped that my reputation in the business grows.
