We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I was coming off of baby no two and starting to take care of my body, mind, and soul authentically. I was working out cycling at this fitness studio close to my house, which I had come to love. I was good at it, and I loved it. One day, there was a sign advertising the hiring of new instructors on the door. My friend suggested to me that I would be good at that.
I was surprised she would see me in this light, but I must admit it is always something I had wanted to do. I applied, and submitted a audtion video to be able to get into the training process. The process to pass and get on the floor was intense and grueling. However, I was a amazing fitness instructor for about 5 years. That decision changed everything and showed me how important having a impact in other peoples lives was to me. The rest is history.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Texas-raised mother and wife who spreads her passion for health and fitness to women in her community and online. An expert in health and nutrition as a nutritional therapy practitioner, my passion comes from years of struggles with both weight and mental health issues.
In Better Than Before: How Overcoming Depression and Obesity Led To One My Wellness Transformation, I reveal how she reduced her symptoms of anxiety and depression and lost 70 pounds post-pregnancy by developing a wellness practice that included nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and accountability.
Beyond my lived experience, Better Than Before includes professional expertise on why traditional methods for weight loss and mental health treatment often fails women, particularly during significant life transitions like postpartum recovery and menopause. All things I learned along the way dealing with severe PPD.
Since becoming a certified nutritional coach, I have helped hundreds of women reach their fitness goals without sacrificing freedom. With expertise in menopause and fitness for women over 50, this book offers lasting health strategies for every stage of womanhood.
Better Than Before is the story of a woman who managed to change herself and, in the process, create a sustainable approach to health that works through every stage of womanhood.
Today, Mitchell uses both her personal experience and her professional knowledge to guide women in becoming the best version of themselves, teaching them to understand the foundations of health and take back their lives.
Better Than Before is her first book.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Accountability. I always tell my clients we do not have an information problem. You can find information anywhere and everywhere. We have an implementation problem, meaning how do you apply this knowledge and ultimately change your life? The secret sauce is in the accountability and community that you have around you to recruit help.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I truly changed my own life, so I live this every single day. I think authenticity is the highest vibrating emotion, and people truly love someone who is not asking you to do something they wouldn’t do themselves. People have watched me live this out, year after year. That has allowed me to gain trust and rapport with my clients.
