We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sunhee Joo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sunhee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My First Curatorial Exhibition at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles.
I have shown my artworks since I received an MFA in Painting from UCLA in 1987. I have exhibited 12 solo shows
in Los Angeles, California. This year, for the first time, instead of showing my works, I wanted to have a curatorial exhibition by inviting three artists and six participating artists. The show title is “TAG Gallery Celebrating the 55th Anniversary of Earth Day /
Our Earth: What Artists Can Do / Curated by Sunhee Joo”
Recently, I have noticed ominous climate changes and our Earth’s dire condition. I was impacted by human perils and was compelled to ask artists what they can do to help this situation. I invited three artists and six other participating artists to show their love and concern for our earth. This show does not give you an answer to many pressing questions. This exhibition is designed to inspire you to love our planet and do a little bit of good for Our Earth.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am originally from Korea with a BS in Physics, but I found my artistic inclination and got an MFA in Painting from UCLA.
in 1987.
For this exhibition, I have researched about the climate change on Earth as a scientist , and also I have thought about how I, as an artist, can contribute something positive to this crisis of Our Planet Earth.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Most artists are engaged in social media like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Sometimes the social media pressure the artists to be their means to the profits instead of beings of cultural assets.
I wish social media promote inspiring artists and creative artists to be as they are.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my personal goal is to align my path of life to the will of God. I did not have any religion when I came to America.
But after much life experience and learning, I became a Catholic. My faith grew gradually, and now I believe that God is love.
I believe that too much greed, competition, and prejudice are destroying Our Earth and people on it.
So I would like to inspire people to love Our Plant Earth and love each other in daily life.
