Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kit Joseph. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kit thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project is the work I do with my band the Pew Pew Pews.
It started with my friend Ravi working on artwork for an EP for him and then we decided to stick together to continue working on stuff. I am not a musician but I was so integral to the creative process we just formed the 2 man band, the Pew Pew Pews. He handles the music and I handle the visuals even videos.
Can’t wait to return to that project.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Coming from Trinidad and Tobago, I think coming the US was a way for me to gain access to industry. I am finishing my MFA in Illustration and MA in Sequential Art now at SCAD, so my main goals would be to launch a freelance career in illustration for games and comics of course and to teach at the college level.
I love sharing and inspring people so I think as an educator that energy would transfer. As an illustrator, my work is mostly narrative and my thesis focusses on idioms around the world so telling stories from various cultures or perspectives is important to me. As a comic artist, I enjoy the collaborative aspect of that industry and the community is amazing. Collaboration is already happening now as I near graduation, working with a writer from the film department who has a afro surreal horror story that really intersts me. Our collaborations seems enduring and that’s exciting.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are small victories all the time. From completing a task or learning a new technique brings a dopamine hit that lasts a while until the next hurdle. For me the most rewarding aspect is finding people that share a mission with you and are willing to join you on the path especially if they bring a different skill set. I’ve been blessed in my life to have found that on two different endeavors involving more music and one with art and archiving.
Recently, new relationships and collaborations are forming and the future looks bright!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the resilience is life long. Doing what we do, means we are constantly under scrutiny and critique that normally starts from within. Seeing an artist speak, present or show means that person is overcoming a battle.
I think teaching is a part of that journey that really tests the resilience. As an artist, you have the internal dialogue to contend with, but as an art educator, you have to be so sure about yourself; to be strong and confident about your work for your students and it has to come from a place of authenticity, grace and empathy of course.
