We recently connected with Zee Dockery and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Zee, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I’m not just creating coloring books or art items. I’m creating space.
Space for Black women to breathe, to reflect, to cry, to heal, and to feel seen—in full color.
Every page I design, every prompt I write, every quote I choose is intentional.
It’s a soft offering, a gentle hug, and a mirror saying, “Sis, you matter.”
My legacy isn’t about just selling art—it’s about building a community of women who are reclaiming their joy, their inner child, their peace.
It’s about using creativity as therapy, as worship, as restoration.
I’m giving voice to the quiet parts of us that the world tries to overlook.
And I’m showing the next generation that healing can be beautiful, sacred, and ours.
This work will outlive me.
Someone’s daughter will color a page I created and feel brave.
A mother will journal through her pain and write herself back to wholeness.
A sister will laugh, cry, and rise—because she found herself inside a book that felt like home.
What I love about Art is it doesn’t just decorate, but it liberates
my coloring pages don’t just look good but they do good for the culture and community
Zee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Zee Dockery a multidisciplinary artist, mental health professional, and the founder of a creative wellness brand rooted in healing, sisterhood, and self-expression. I’ve always believed that art can do more than decorate—it can liberate, restore, and reflect. My work lives at the intersection of creativity and care, especially for Black women who are tired of being strong and ready to feel seen, soft, and whole.
By day, I work in the mental health field, which means I come into this work not just with creativity—but with clinical knowledge, trauma-informed awareness, and a deep respect for emotional healing. I’ve seen firsthand how many people—especially women of color—need safe, culturally affirming ways to slow down and reconnect with themselves. That’s what inspired me to create my first therapeutic coloring and journaling book:
“Hey Sis, Breathe in Color.”
This isn’t just a coloring book—it’s a self-care tool. A healing ritual. A movement. Every page is designed with intention, offering affirming Black imagery, reflective journaling prompts, and gentle practices inspired by mindfulness and therapy. It’s perfect for the woman in her becoming era—the one who’s choosing joy, softness, and inner peace on her own terms.
In addition to the book, I also host creative events and community-centered art experiences that blend reflection with fun—think coloring pop-ups, journaling circles, glass-painting nights, and healing-centered vendor spaces. My goal is to create experiences where people can pause, process, and pour back into themselves.
What sets my brand apart is that I bring both the soul and the structure. I’m not just an artist—I’m also trained in mental health care, so everything I create is crafted with care, credibility, and cultural depth. My brand is for the women who want more than pretty pages—it’s for the ones ready to heal out loud, laugh through their growth, and breathe in color one page at a time.
This work is personal to me. It’s rooted in lived experience, professional insight, and a love for my people. What I’m building isn’t just a business—it’s a legacy of healing, culture, and joy.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There was a moment—like so many other women have—when I was doing everything for everyone but had nothing left for myself.
I was showing up to work. I was being strong. I was being dependable. I was pouring into others. But inside, I was running on fumes. I remember one day, I came home and sat on the edge of my bed—still in my work clothes—and just cried. Not because something bad had happened… but because I was exhausted. Numb. Disconnected from my joy.
That night, instead of scrolling or numbing out, I grabbed a notebook and started sketching. Then writing. Then coloring. I didn’t know it at the time, but that was me breathing again. That was the beginning of Hey Sis, Breathe in Color—the moment I realized I didn’t need to keep pushing through. I needed a pause. I needed reflection. I needed softness. And I needed to give myself permission to feel it all.
That’s why I created this book—not just as something to sell, but as a space.
For women like me.
Women who are tired of being “strong.”
Women who are healing from things they never even had words for.
Women who want to breathe, feel, and come back home to themselves.
. This isn’t just my story. It’s our story. Because so many of us have learned to survive—but now, Sis, it’s time to heal and thrive.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best way to attract a new source of clients is to be clear, consistent, and authentic in your message—and meet your audience where they already are. For me, that means showing up with intention—whether it’s online through social media or in-person at community events, vendor markets, or wellness spaces.
People are drawn to brands that feel real, that solve a problem, and that speak directly to their needs. So I focus on building genuine relationships over just selling. I create content and experiences that reflect the heart of my brand, invite engagement, and offer value—whether that’s through free journal prompts, live coloring events, or stories about why healing through art matters.
Also, don’t sleep on partnerships. Collaborating with other creatives, mental health professionals, or local organizations has helped me reach new audiences I may not have accessed on my own. When your work aligns with your mission, your energy attracts the right people. And word of mouth—especially in tight-knit, culturally rooted communities—is gold.
So I’d say: be clear on your value, show up consistently, and create spaces where your ideal clients feel seen and supported. When that happens, you don’t have to chase them—they’ll find you.
