Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mackenzie Labine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mackenzie, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Hi! Yes!
The inspiration behind founding Sacred Heart Hair came from my years as a hair educator, traveling to salons all over the world.
Through that experience, I noticed what was missing in the hair industry — especially when it came to hair extensions.
At Sacred Heart Hair, we invest an incredible amount of time into training, educating, and practicing with our team until they are truly ready to deliver exceptional results for our clients.
While many people can install extensions, few can offer healthy, customized solutions that allow guests to explore different methods based on their unique needs.
We specialize in working with clients experiencing hair loss, offering transformative solutions like CombLine installs and mesh integration to help them achieve the hair of their dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Mackenzie Labine!
I’ve been part of the hair industry since 1997.
I got my start studying at the very first Aveda Institute, located right here in Northeast Minneapolis — the same neighborhood where my salon now calls home.
With a lifelong love of fashion, beauty, and hair, becoming a hairdresser (and later, a salon owner and educator) felt like the most natural path for me.
I’ve been an educator with Bellami Professional for about four years, and with over 25 years of hands-on experience with hair extensions, I proudly consider myself an expert in the field.
There’s nothing I love more than helping people achieve the hair of their dreams through extensions and sharing my passion and knowledge with stylists around the world through education.
You’ll often find me behind a ring light, filming content for education — it’s a huge part of what I do!
While I’m still welcoming new guests into my chair, I’m just as excited to watch my incredible team grow and build their own clienteles.
Outside of the salon, I love traveling, spending time with my two puppies and family, and recharging through meditation and time in nature. Downtime is a must for me!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What truly sets me apart in this industry is my deep commitment to education. I’m constantly seeking to learn every method and technique that can elevate both the client experience and my team’s skills.
I’m trained in over eight different hair extension methods, and I often blend techniques to create a customized, flawless fit for each individual guest. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to extensions, so I make it a priority to stay current with trends, innovations, and best practices in both hair care and hair health. If there’s something new to learn, I’m all in.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve truly done it all in this industry—starting as an assistant, then working as a commission stylist, renting a chair in a large salon, opening my own suite, co-owning a salon with a business partner, and now, opening my own salon completely on my own.
Traveling and connecting with other salon owners has given me even more perspective. I’ve seen firsthand how different businesses operate and have had countless conversations with friends in the industry about what really works—and what doesn’t. All of that experience has shaped the way I run my business today, helping me avoid common pitfalls and stay focused on what matters most.
Making my guests’ comfort and trust my top priority has completely transformed the way I approach my work.
I literally just love hair and making people fall in love with themselves a little bit more after spending some time in my chair.
