We recently connected with Joseph Drake and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My first gig in film production was on the set of the indie horror film “The Lashman” directed by Cameron McCasland. My duties was being a grip/production assistant and I even got a small role as a police officer. From there I got the taste of movie making and was starving for more so I seeked out every film production that I could be a part of. I ended up working with John Gibson on an indie western zombie film titled “Revelation Trail” where I got to play the very cool role of an native indian named Chayton. Cameron and John both were very inspiring to me as indie film directors, so I decided to try and create my own film.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 2007 my film partner David G Baker (Director of Photography) produced our first film titled “The Girl Without A Name”. The film was a true story documentary based on a cold case out of Muhlenburg County, KY. Our film told the story of a child found in a well and buried without a name. The film also unraveled the truth behind the story and revealed the identity of the unfortunate child.
David and I continued from there making the feature indie horror slashers “Fearsville” and “Fearsville 2”. Years later in 2017 we got with the writer Geraldine Sutton Stith and together we produced the film “The Invasion of Kelly” which is based on a true story about Geraldine’s family and their encounters with the Kelly little green men. This was an exciting story and indeed the inspiration that gave Steven Spielberg the idea to create his movie “E.T. – Extraterrestrial”
We premiered our latest film “Scarytales and Deadtime Stories” in the fall of 2024. It has had great reception. The film is a anthology horror film consisting of four stories that come together for a gruesome finale. I am currently in the works of getting it to land on streaming platforms so hopefully we should be seeing that soon.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The rewarding thing about being a film producer is being able to write stories, create characters and watching our cast bring these characters to life. I have been very fortunate to work with so many amazing actors that end up becoming my film family.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, the best way that society can best support artist is to pay attention to what is being created and watch and listen to the films or music that artists produce. We make this content for you to enjoy, so it is very rewarding to know that people are watching our movies, listening to our music and providing feedback.
