Today we’d like to introduce you to Jontell Green.
Hi Jontell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sure, I was born in Torrance, California to a single mother. Lived in just about every city in LA due to housing situations until we finally settled in riverside. Growing up I dealt with a lot of self esteem issues, which led to being bullied a lot when I was a kid, as well as physical abuse at home. Eventually I turned to writing, first in the form of daily thoughts for each day. Then later progressed into poetry and then later into Hip Hop. When I first started I tried to emulate Tupac and Method Man, then in high school it was Ludacris and Lil Wayne. Until eventually, through a lot of soul searching I found my own style that I’m still perfecting to this day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say smooth, no. Theres been a lot of self doubt, stressful writing sessions, and disappointing reactions. But the biggest obstacle for me would be battling with my own thoughts, It’s something that I’ve always dealt with, I’m my own worst critic. At times its cost me to not do things, or even delayed certain blessings that I feel were waiting for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist/poet. I love telling stories with words, from short stories expressing how I feel to rhyming words in a dope pattern. How I look at words and how I feel them I believe is different then some, I believe in painting a vivvid picture as best you can for the reader or listener. I also believe that HOW and WHEN you say or use certain words can also give that listener or reader certain energy. So when writing I tend focus on these points as best I can.
What matters most to you? Why?
My family, I don’t have a big family. And unfortunately we lost several loved ones last year. So spending as much time as I can with them is definitely important to me.
