Today we’d like to introduce you to One Mic.
Hi One, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story begins in the south east section of The Bronx, NY. Castle Hill to be exact. Or as I like to call it, Castle hell. Which is exactly what it was at times, but I wouldn’t rather be from anywhere else on earth.
My start to this journey was not what I initially had planned. After failing to make the football team my senior year of high school I was pretty much lost. And like many others who find themselves lost in this environment, I turned to the streets. Doing whatever I could to make a few dollars no matter the risk. With no direction and no purpose, however, I always knew that I had a calling.
Not until I began to gain knowledge of self did I realize what that calling was. A calling to express myself truly through art and spoken-word. To stand for equality, self-love and human rights. Which I would have never came to the realization of if I didn’t gain knowledge of self first.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d say the road got smoother as I became wiser in my decisions but there were many struggles along the way. Struggles financially, physically and mentally, like the great Fredrick Douglas said “if there is no struggle, there is no progress”.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an artist, I specialize in mixed media paintings and canvas sculptures that blend bold textures, vibrant colors, and complex storytelling. My work is rooted in my own personal experiences, dreams and the energy of the world around me. From my perspective the only thing I’m known for is staying true to myself while being a good husband, son, brother and uncle (ohh yea and cat dad). One of my proudest achievements is winning an open call at the Greenpoint Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. What sets me apart is my knowledge of self, I’ll let you decipher the rest.
What matters most to you?
Knowledge of self and the 12 jewels because those are the keys to physical life on earth.
