Today we’d like to introduce you to To Kevin and Bruno.
Hi Kevin and Bruno, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Kevin and I have been playing music together for the better part of 14 years. We started off playing original acoustic material in our math teacher’s classroom after school. We realized pretty early on that we had chemistry and decided to take music a bit more seriously. After an ebb and flow of different musical projects and a plethora of members cycling in and out, we finally decided that we would take matters into our own hands and handle all of the music writing ourselves. To Bloom came about as the latest iteration of our collaborative efforts. In 2019 we realized that we had matured in our writing capabilities and made the active choice to pursue music with intent – we went all in and captured our new sound at a local Portland studio which had worked on some of our favorite bands’ albums. There was a level of quality that we wanted to achieve and we decided that we would get there no matter the cost. We sunk quite a bit of money into recording, branding, and social media campaigns to ensure that our music reached the right audience. Thankfully our efforts didn’t go unnoticed; in 2022 we managed to make our way into Spin Magazine’s Top 22 Artists to Watch in 2022 and Metalhammer’s 12 New Bands to Watch in 2022. With the attention we’ve garnered, we’ve used it as fuel to continue writing vulnerable and visceral music and it has been paying off. Our latest single Hound set the standard for what we want out of our sound and we’ve been working hard to maintain that standard.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish we could say it’s been a smooth road but like many things in life, such is not the case. Up until recently, We’ve struggled to find the right members to fit the sound we’re striving for and costs for recording are almost prohibitively expensive – this has been the biggest hurdle we’ve faced thus far. That being said, we’ve managed to pull in a lot of favors to lower overhead costs and are lucky enough to have been able to handle all of our marketing ourselves. We’ve learned quite a bit from our efforts and have invested in tools to make recording from home a reality ensuring that money is no longer an issue moving forward. More than anything we want complete creative control over our music, and once we’ve made the initial investments we’ll have that at virtually every step of the creative process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We write progressive rock, it’s a genre that’s filled with a lot of outstanding musicians. I think what sets us apart is our ability to explore sounds without fear of what people might think. We pull from a lot of different genres when writing and I think our vulnerable lyrics are another huge factor to what sets us apart from other bands. We speak the words that can’t be spoken through our intricately crafted music in the hopes of creating catharsis and a sense of comfort for those who listen to us. We are a reminder that no one is alone in their struggles and that, as hard as it all may be, it gets better. We grow, we bloom.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Persistence has been a huge one for us. We’ve persevered through a lot of struggles to continue moving forward with our music. We love what we do but there is a lot of work that goes into making music a tangible thing. We strive for quality in both the recording as well as the music itself. It’s a long and sometimes tedious process that can be fatiguing at times but our persistence and desire to hear our own music is what keeps us going. The more we push the greater the rewards is what we’ve noticed. At the end of the day, it’s an impulse for us, so we’re going to keep writing and growing no matter what.
