Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian Liang Emlet.
Hi Lillian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, the eldest daughter of immigrants from Taiwan. We didn’t have much and lived simply. My upbringing was typical hard work ethic instilled in myself and my sisters. After graduating early from high school at 16 because I was motivated to leave the small rural town and experience the world, I went to Penn State University and discovered the joys of volunteering, service, creativity, and friendships in the Asian American community and Residence Life communities. I then went on to graduate school because I wanted to be independent financially from my parents, and ended up tutoring for Kaplan for the MCAT and proceeded to go to medical school. After medical school, I chose Emergency Medicine because it is a specialty that is the safety net of care for everyone in this country, taking care of people 24/7/365. During residency, I questioned my satisfaction with this choice, and fell in love with critical care medicine, taking care of people through the most life-threatening and complex physiology and with personal connections with their families. There was no pathway for emergency physicians to enter into critical care, and I chose to do what a few rare physicians did back then, anyway: train in one of the first 2-3 locations that offered training. I then later advocated for a pathway to board certifications and have been a leader in the career and mentorship development of EM-CCM physicians.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever smooth! And windy roads have the best views and fun discoveries. If it weren’t for EM, I wouldn’t have found CCM. If I hadn’t found CCM, I wouldn’t have taken a deeper dive into medical education. If it weren’t for simulation education, I wouldn’t have been paired with mentors in Palliative Medicine and Critical Care, which shaped my career as a teacher of communication skills with VitalTalk. Then the pandemic happened, the world shut down, I went through a divorce, and everything simplified. To get through my divorce, I experienced the power of energy leadership coaching. I then went back to school virtually during the pandemic, became a coach myself, and started my company, Transforming Healthcare Coaching, in order to bring the power of energy leadership coaching to all healthcare professionals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a coaching company that provides energy leadership coaching for healthcare professionals to help them level up in life and work. We offer 1:1 executive and individual coaching packages, and a group coaching program called medTHRIVE, which is a community designed to help like-minded healthcare professionals recover and prevent burnout through support and strategies for wellbeing. Our coaches at Transforming Healthcare Coaching believe that burnout is not inevitable, and through the power of coaching, we can help talented healthcare professionals find their “both/and” in life and find a sustainable practice. We are most proud of our diverse ways that we can help healthcare professionals with life transitions, career transitions, executive leadership skills, parenting and relationship concerns, health and burnout. We have a podcast and email newsletter to get to know us: Transforming Healthcare Coaching podcast on YouTube, Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Podbean.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was, and still am, very outgoing and friendly. I love making people feel at home and also being the peacemaker in the group. I am always curious and interested in all kinds of things, happy to learn and make conversation.
