Curtis , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

I began mentoring as a sophomore in college however the impetus of my journey began at the age of 14 when I encountered my first mentor. I was raised by my mother & grandmother, and this was the first time a man made a genuine attempt to be in my life expecting nothing in return but for me to do my best in school, sports and develop as a healthy productive man. Fast forward I gravitated towards opportunities to serve others through volunteer opportunities in college and this carried forward into my adult life. I founded Nu Collar Solutions in 2018 as a means to serve and empower young men of color between ages 12-19 by addressing their needs through holistic enrichment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Embarking on the path of entrepreneurship and life coaching is far from a smooth road. One of the most significant challenges I faced was accepting that I was truly called to this work—a journey that often left me feeling unqualified, and at times, still does. Yet, through faith, lived experiences, and the incredible individuals placed in my life, I’ve found the strength and authenticity to connect with young men in meaningful ways. This connection fosters trust and provides the support they need to thrive.
On the professional side, certifications in life coaching, mental health first aid, and mentorship provide a foundational framework for my work. However, these tools are not the end-all-be-all; they are guides, not rigid blueprints. Effective coaching, at its core, requires a balance of human-centered understanding, emotional intelligence, and the ability to adapt these frameworks to the unique needs of each individual.
At its best, coaching is about tailoring approaches that empower others to grow into their fullest potential. It’s about creating a space for authentic connection and facilitating transformation that aligns with each person’s unique journey. In this dynamic process, I continue to grow, learn, and trust the purpose behind my calling.
