Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim & Jenn.
Hi Jim & Jenn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Jim: So, it all started with a simple idea that I (Jim) had one day. I knew I wanted to create something fun, but I had no idea what it would look like. I’ve always loved having conversations with Jenn—whether we were cracking jokes, getting into deep discussions about life, or just ranting about whatever nonsense was on our minds. We’d always joke around and say, “We’d be great on reality TV” because we’re always just ourselves—a little bit sarcastic, a little bit goofy, but totally real.
One day, I thought, why not turn those conversations into a podcast? So, I asked Jenn if she’d be interested in partnering up. And she was immediately on board—because she’s always down to be my co-conspirator in whatever weird idea I come up with. Within two weeks, we had launched You’re Pretty Also.
From there, it kind of just took off. We realized we had this unique opportunity to create a space where we could share our lives, our opinions, and our perspectives in a way that felt authentic. We didn’t want to just talk at people—we wanted our listeners to feel like they were right there with us. Like we were at brunch, talking about whatever was on our minds. And, to be honest, we didn’t know what the podcast would become. We just knew we wanted to connect with people and bring some joy into their day.
What’s really been amazing is hearing from listeners who feel like they’re part of our circle. That’s been so validating. Our goal has always been simple: we want to brighten people’s days with humor, honesty, and a little bit of nonsense. We talk about everything from mental health to aliens, and we don’t shy away from sharing our messiest moments. If our listeners can laugh or feel seen through our stories, then we’re doing our job.
We’re still figuring things out as we grow, but right now, we’re focused on building that connection and expanding our community. Maybe down the road, we’ll turn this into a full-time gig, but for now, it’s all about having fun and being real with the people who show up and support us. We’re so grateful for this journey and where it’s taking us.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Jenn: Oh, smooth is definitely not the word I’d use! But that’s what makes the journey fun, right? There have definitely been a lot of bumps in the road—starting a podcast is way more complicated than it sounds! We didn’t have any podcasting experience when we started, so we were basically just winging it. We thought, “How hard can it be?” and then we were like, Oh, it’s pretty hard.
Tech was a huge struggle for us at first. Getting the sound right, figuring out how to edit without making ourselves want to pull our hair out, and dealing with all those random issues that pop up—like when Jim’s mic stops working right before we’re about to record, or when our recording software decides to have a meltdown mid-episode. It’s like the universe wants to test how much patience we really have.
And then there’s the whole thing of putting ourselves out there. It’s one thing to chat with your best friend about whatever pops into your head, but it’s another thing to do that in front of a bunch of people—especially when you’re being super open and vulnerable. Sometimes I think, “What if I say something that makes me sound ridiculous or too raw?” But then I remember that the point is to just be us, messiness and all. So we lean into it, even when it feels awkward or uncomfortable.
The biggest struggle, though, has been learning how to balance everything. Jim and I both have full-time lives outside of the podcast, so finding time to record, edit, and engage with our listeners while juggling everything else has been a challenge. But we’ve learned that we need to give ourselves some grace and not expect everything to be perfect right away.
Honestly, though, all these struggles have made us stronger. We’ve learned so much along the way, and it’s been worth every hiccup and mistake. It’s part of the process, and the journey is what makes the success feel that much sweeter.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Jim: At the core of You’re Pretty Also, we specialize in creating real, raw, and relatable content that’s designed to make people feel like they’re hanging out with friends. The podcast is a space where we blend humor, vulnerability, and honest conversation—whether we’re talking about pop culture, mental health, or just our everyday adventures. I think what we’re known for is our ability to bring listeners into our world. We’ve intentionally kept the show broad—no topic is off-limits—which keeps things fresh and engaging. We go from serious discussions about self-worth and mental health to silly banter about reality TV, all while keeping it light and real.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’re building. People tell us all the time that it feels like they’re part of our group, and that’s exactly what we wanted: a space where people can connect, laugh, and feel seen. That’s what sets us apart from other podcasts. We’re not just another show covering the latest news or trends; we focus on building an atmosphere of authentic connection. We’re proud of being a podcast that’s as much about friendship and fun as it is about meaningful conversations.
Jenn: You’re Pretty Also specializes in being an honest, unfiltered space for real conversation. As hosts, we bring our own unique experiences and personalities to the show, but the podcast itself is all about creating a space where people can just be themselves. We tackle everything from lighthearted pop culture chatter to more serious topics like body image, mental health, and self-acceptance. What sets us apart is that we give ourselves permission to be vulnerable and talk about things that are sometimes difficult or uncomfortable—whether that’s my journey with body positivity or Jim’s perspective on navigating life as a gay man.
We’re also known for blending humor with those deeper conversations. There’s a lot of fun to be had on our podcast, but we always make sure to ground our discussions in real life. I think what I’m most proud of is how we’ve managed to create a podcast that doesn’t just entertain—it connects people. We’re not just talking at an audience; we’re bringing people into our circle, and that’s been the most rewarding part. What sets us apart is the authenticity and balance we strike between the silly and the serious. We want to make people laugh, yes, but we also want to make them feel seen, heard, and maybe even a little bit better about themselves.
How do you think about luck?
Jenn: When it comes to luck, I think it’s played a bit of a mixed role in both my life and the podcast. On one hand, I definitely feel lucky to have Jim as a partner. We just click creatively, and that synergy has made You’re Pretty Also so much fun to create. That’s the kind of “luck” you can’t manufacture.
But when it comes to building our community? There’s been a lot less luck and a lot more hustle. We’ve had to put in the work to get the word out—especially with social media and just grinding to spread the word locally. We didn’t have a huge following when we started, so we leaned into some guerrilla marketing, attending local events, talking to people in our community, and using every platform available to us to promote the podcast. It’s been a slow burn, but we’ve been intentional about growing one listener at a time. It hasn’t always been easy, and there were definitely times when it felt like we were pushing uphill, but we just kept showing up and putting in the work.
Where the real “luck” has come in is with the incredible support of our listeners. We’ve been so fortunate that our community has been so willing to shout our names to anyone who will listen. The fact that people are out there recommending our podcast, sharing it with their friends, and helping us grow by word of mouth—that’s been the kind of luck that really makes a difference. It feels like we’ve built something special, and it’s because our listeners genuinely believe in us. We’ve been lucky in the sense that we’ve got an amazing group of people who are as invested in our journey as we are.
So, while there’s definitely been some hard work and determination involved, I feel really lucky to have found such a supportive community to grow with.
