Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Puno Garcia.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an Emmy Award winning Choreographer who has created work for Broadway, Film, and Television. I began performing in Broadway shows, Tours, TV/Film.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been about finding my own voice as an artist – what makes me me. The moment I understood and took ownership of my point of view, I really started to grow.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My Choreography is very music sensitive and narrative-inspired. These two elements are important in my work. I gravitate towards funk, jazz, big band, and dynamic sounding pieces of music to create to.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be inspired by others, but don’t compare yourself. As a short, Filipina, female dancer in theater, I didn’t know what kind of opportunities were available. Sometimes it worked in my favor and sometimes it didn’t. Your idea of success will change, and our path is our own. Trust that.
