Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Phil Summers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Phil, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I was 17 it was high school and 1967. In Cardiff, Wales. I had a high school band and I played guitar. My first paid gig was at a roller skating rink. The band was called Deep Blue Center and I still have a picture of the flyer. It was a huge barn of a place with folks roller skating around and around the stage.
We were playing mostly Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and Chuck Berry. I bought the guitar from Woolworth for 10 pounds. Which for a high school kid, it was a lot of money in those days. I have never stopped playing. I still perform and earn music in two bands and as a solo Spanish guitar player.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a guitar player and bass player since high school I am now 75 and still performing. In a reggae band called Roots man project, a world music and jazz quartet called Carte Blanche and I also play solo Spanish guitar. I am completely self-taught I cannot read music but I can read jazz charts. I grew up in Britain when the Beatles and the rolling Stones will be coming really big and so everybody had to play guitar! I probably know almost every song the Beatles played. I have my own YouTube channel with all my music and I have two other channels if you want to look them up here are the links.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
These days a social media presence is essential if you want to get your creative arts out in front of people. You have to post almost every day new content as much as possible. A YouTube channel, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
I started in the days before social media or even the internet. Performing live was essential and collecting email addresses so that you could tell your fans where you’re going to be playing. When they show up thank them you have to cultivate your followers just like you would your friends.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To make other people happy maybe enrich their lives and enriching my own life at the same time. My social life pretty much revolves around music ever since I was in high school.
