Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Sinclair. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
The internet hasn’t made real estate easier for the consumer, it’s made real estate more convoluted for the average person outside of the industry. Everyone knew the invention of the internet would permeate every industry, making many professions obsolete or far less necessary. Real estate agents, along with other service brokers (like travel and insurance agents) were very highly expected to disappear the same way Blockbuster did. But here we are in 2025 and there are more real estate agents than ever, and fewer people venturing to sell or buy a house on their own. Why is that? There’s a lot of noise out there that real estate agents are no longer relevant in the modern world, and everyone has simply been indoctrinated to believe they need one. Surely with enough negative propoganda, people will realize that real estate agents are useless and stop using them- right? That hasn’t happened- at least not yet. And I don’t believe it ever will. Because buying and selling a home isn’t easier than its ever been, its more complex and high stakes than it was pre-internet. With wire fraud scams running rampant, frauds posing as professionals on Google, and every disgruntled person eager to sue whoever they believe is at fault- buying and selling a house in today’s world is more daunting than ever. The consumer has more choices than ever, and every company shouts about how their way is the best. “Buy a Home Warranty and Have Peace of Mind” but also “Why Home Warranties are a Waste of Money” and “Get a Pre-Listing Appraisal to Price Your Home Correctly” but also “Buyers are Paying Cash 20K Over Appraisal Value?” How can someone outside of the industry sort through all this noise? How can they know which services are worth their weight in salt? How can they make life changing decisions that will affect their upcoming move without the data to inform their choice? I believe the average person is more at risk today because of the influx of mediocre information on the internet, than they were pre-Google. It’s more important than ever to work with a qualified and trustworthy professional when buying or selling a home than ever. And finding the right agent is the most important decision you will make when moving.
Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a licensed REALTOR® for 5 years, and in 2023 I launched Laura Makes Moves, a relocation brand centered around the challenges of making a long distance move. I educate and consult with moving families to help create a relocation plan that will get them started lining up the important factors of a move like, dealing with relocation emotions, planning, budgeting, finding housing, moving logistics, and building a new community. I offer different tools and services to help make these phases of moving simpler. My core service is helping people get connected to the best agent in their future town to help them successfully buy a house from out of state. At the end of the day, while I can help them line up their logistics, I can’t answer questions specific to their future town. But as a real estate agent who specializes in relocation- I know who can. I know that some real estate agents are community liaisons for their town, and a relocating person’s best friend when they don’t know anyone. But not all agents are connected community members, and most aren’t skilled in the nuances of helping an out of state buyer. I find these agents across the US and Canada and connect them to moving families who are looking for extra support.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My primary source of leads is through my social media presence on Instagram and Pinterest. I post content very carefully crafted towards my typical client avatar. I think deeply about the questions and feelings that person has when they are preparing for a long distance move, and I try to speak in their language so they know I understand and can help. If you’re trying to find a larger audience on social media, you are going to need to be committed to it. It takes time and consistency to build a following that actually want to buy from you. You have to be willing to try things, and keep at it or pivot when its not working. And if nothing else, you need to just start posting. Don’t wait until its perfect. Don’t wait until your offering is ready. Don’t even wait until you have nailed down your business name and colors- start posting immediately and keep posting while you figure it all out.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020, my second year in real estate, I sent my first referral for my inlaws in a different state. They needed an agent to help them buy and sell a house and asked me to help. I talked to a few people and found one I thought would be a good fit. A few months later I received a referral check for just under $5,000 for the sale and purchase. Sweet! While I enjoyed it- the lightbulb hadn’t gone off yet. It wasn’t until 2022 when I had established myself as the go-to relocation agent in my small town that I spoke with someone who had moved to our town and wasn’t happy with their experience. She noticed how I would go above and beyond to help my out of town clients feel at home, and said she wished she had found me before moving so I could help her too. It got me thinking that when people move to a new town (opposed to moving within a town they are well connected in), they really are shooting in the dark to find an agent. Because I knew how Google Ads worked, and how home search sites worked, it didn’t mean those you can easily find on the internet are actually the better agents, it just means they are paying to be there. Now the lightbulb had gone off- there was a real need for consumers outside of the real estate industry to have a professional cut through the online clutter and really get them connected to the best agents in any town. It wasn’t until a year later I launched my relocation and referral business, and now I am more passionate about connecting clients with agents than I am connecting people with homes. It’s a light I couldn’t unsee, and even though its not as profitable as my real estate sales business, I won’t give it up. The pivot to an online brand that transcends my little town has been an adventure and the story isn’t over yet.
