We were lucky to catch up with Astra Gordon, recently and have shared our conversation below.
Astra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
One of my favorite patient success stories is of a woman who came in for infertility issues. Prior to coming in to see me, she was told because she had a specific underlying reproductive condition and a low ovarian reserve it was not likely that she would ever be able to conceive. She was heart broken. She and her husband wanted a baby more than anything in the world. It was their greatest hope and dream to start a family together and they were both pretty devasted to learn that this may not be within the realm of possibility for them. After our first meeting, however, I conducted an extensive intake and examination and soon realized that although I couldn’t make any guarantees, there was still hope as long we could resolve some of the underlying health challenges that were .obstructing her ability get pregnant. We worked together for 5 months, where she came in for weekly acupuncture treatments, made specific life style and dietary modifications and took herbs and supplements to help resolve her reproductive issues and strengthen her body. And wouldn’t you know it, she started to feel better, had more energy, was less stressed and sleeping more soundly and after about 5 months she got the good news that she was pregnant! Nine months later she gave birth to a beautiful and healthy little boy.

Astra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Astra Gordon. I’m a licensed acupuncturist, eastern herbalist, integrative functional clinical nutritionist and owner of Zen Point Acupuncture, located here in Austin, TX.
I’ve been in practice now for about a decade. I initially became an acupuncturist and practitioner of eastern medicine because acupuncture works! Eastern medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine, with thousands of years of wisdom behind it and it works better than anything I have personally ever experienced, when of course, it’s applied by a skilled and licensed practitioner.
In my practice, I have successfully treated over a thousand patients and a wide array of conditions, including acute and chronic pain, infertility, auto immune, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, insomnia, headaches, allergies and many more. Because I take a holistic approach to health, I look at each patient as a whole person, recognizing the importance of addressing all existing health issues within an individual rather than just solely the primary ailment for which they may be seeking treatment. It might be surprising to some that this approach to managing health also includes harmonizing emotions as the mind-body connection, although often neglected, is a vital component of health and healing. I love this medicine because it’s free of adverse side effects and utilizes the vast wisdom of nature to create change and balance within the body.
I think because Zen Point Acupuncture is a multi-modality integrative practice, I most pride myself on lifelong continuous learning and training. For example, when it comes to acupuncture, in order to create a positive impact, you have to know more than just what a point does. It’s even more essential to understand point combinations, the nuances between the point categories, meridian systems, how the points interact with one another and the effects these interactions have on the body. Acupuncture is a highly complex system, thus possessing a more in depth understanding of the points and meridian systems is what ultimately leads to an effective treatment and one of the main reasons why expanding my knowledge of the Chinese classics is so important to me. I am a very research driven practitioner so staying current on the latest and most important biomedical research and advances is also a must because it allows me to combine the best of integrative medicine with eastern medicine principles, which ultimately creates a stronger and more innovative foundation for better health, healing and wellness.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the main thing that has helped me achieve my reputation within the field is offering a service that I whole heartedly believe in and getting results! Positive outcomes and efficacious results have greatly contributed to my success as an acupuncturist.
However, I also think that really listening to my patients and offering a space of full support has a lot to do with building my reputation as well. For most patients, being on a health journey requires work and some life style modifications. And these changes can be challenging at times, which is why I find it important to provide a space that is as supportive and encouraging as it is therapeutic. There is no one size fits all approach to medicine. Each person is different and requires their own unique treatment plan but I find that most people have an easier time and heal better when they know they are being heard and are provided with the support they need to be successful on their health journey.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals, hands down, have always been the best source of new clients for me. When patients get results and their health issues get better, they usually tell their friends and family. It is not uncommon that I see my patients, their friends, their spouses and their children. My practice has largely been referral based and has definitely grown into more of a family practice where I provide care to people of all ages and for a broad range of conditions.
