Hi Charlisa , thanks for joining us today. What can you share with us about the story behind how you found your key vendors?
When I first started searching for a reliable vendor, I turned to Facebook. I discovered my key vendor there by browsing groups and pages related to lash artistry. Initially, I began using their products in my classes as a way to test quality without making a heavy financial commitment. This approach of starting small—with kits that include all the essential products—helped me minimize risk. I wasn’t buying in bulk until I was confident that the quality matched my standards and the needs of my clients.
I chose to work with this vendor because they not only delivered outstanding quality but also offered flexibility and a willingness to collaborate. Using their kits in my classes gave both of us exposure: they could reach new potential customers, and I could confidently recommend a product I knew worked well. I believe they made the deal with me because I provided them with a platform to showcase their products, and I was earnest about building a brand based on quality. Our mutual commitment to excellence created a partnership that was beneficial on both sides.
Looking back, there are a few things I would do differently. For one, I would conduct more detailed comparisons with multiple vendors before settling on a partner. This extra step would have given me a broader perspective on pricing, product consistency, and customer service. Additionally, establishing clear communication protocols from the outset could have streamlined the process even further.

– I come from a family of entrepreneurs—my mother has been a beautician for over 30 years, and my dad has built his career in the clothing industry.

– I started taking entrepreneurship seriously around the age of 16. In 2020, I completed my first lash extensions course, which marked the birth of SlayedX(and)Chic.
– I initially offered lash services for just $10, testing the market and refining my craft, which gave me the confidence to invest in myself.

– By 2021, I took a bold step by moving into my first suite where I began hosting classes and offering products.
– Since then, I’ve had the privilege of teaching over 40 women, helping them elevate their skills and start their own journeys in the lash industry.

– Before the breakthrough, I even worked at Wendy’s. Those shifts taught me discipline, hard work, and the importance of seizing every opportunity.
– Staring at the clock at Wendy’s, I often dreamt of building a business that reflected my true passion—lash artistry.
• Key Milestones in Scaling Up
– Investing in Quality and Skill: I continuously honed my lash techniques and marketing strategies, ensuring that my craft remained top-notch.
– Brand Building: I invested in a talented graphic designer who crafted an engaging website and captivating graphics. This creative collaboration led to the development of an e-book and “Beyond the Tray” vendor list, establishing my authority in the industry.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
• Lesson I Had to Unlearn:
– I once believed that true entrepreneurship was all about an endless hustle—always chasing the next client or dollar.
– just because you’re charging $100 for a service doesn’t mean your profiting $100
• The Hard Truth:
– I spent years working behind the chair, living from paycheck to paycheck, and it became clear that non-stop hustling wasn’t sustainable or fulfilling.
• The Shift in My Mindset:
– I realized that success isn’t just about hard work; it’s about working smart and building systems that allow your business to scale.
– I started exploring digital products and passive income streams to break free from being tied to the chair all day.
• What’s Scary and Ongoing:
– I’m still learning how to transition away from the chair, and honestly, it’s scary.
– The unknowns of shifting to a more automated, scalable model are daunting, but I’m committed to making profitable decisions that work for me—and not the other way around.
• The Real Deal:
– This journey has taught me that while hustle has its place, embracing smart, scalable systems is key to long-term success.
– I’m still on that path, experimenting and learning every day because I want to someday earn money in my sleep—and that, to me, is true freedom.
