Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jacob Kirby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jacob thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
My cousin, Louie LoPresti, President and Owner of Advantage Medical Services (AMS) started AMS in 1999. AMS has been family owned and operated in Baltimore County since 1999, Advantage Medical Services offers high-quality Bruno stair glides, porch lifts and vehicle lifts to meet your mobility and accessibility needs. We serve the entire state of Maryland. We have been an approved contract of the VA and have served the needs of both veterans and non-veterans in the state of Maryland. AMS has employees that have worked at the company over 20 years and continue till this day. AMS takes pride in being locally owned and employing local veterans in our community. AMS’s goal with the business was to provide a niche service for our customers in their mobility and accessibility needs. After 25 years in the business, that is still our number one priority. AMS is family owned and operated and employees several members of our family to continue providing a top-level service for our customers.
Jacob, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I went to the University of Maryland College Park to study criminology and pursue a career in law enforcement. After a brief career in law enforcement and government, I decided to pursue a career opportunity in the business world and working with family. Louie, President of AMS, was looking for new and young talent to help grow his business and provide services for the veterans in our community. I took the opportunity to learn about the business, the products, and most importantly customer services. AMS serves veterans for the mobility and accessibility needs as well as those who need assistance to continue to enjoy their houses. Our products give patients ease to enjoy and stay in their homes and enjoy every day activates outside of their homes. AMS is a top dealer for Bruno Independent Living Aids in the state of Maryland and all our of technicians and sales associates are trained to provide multiple solutions for patients in their mobility needs.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
AMS has been a approved contractor of the Maryland and District of Columbia VA Healthcare Systems since 1999. Over time those services have evolved from delivering Durable Medical Equipment to Veterans to now installing and servicing Stair glides, Vertical platform lifts, and Vehicles for Veterans in those VA Healthcare System, From the business of the VA for over 25 years, AMS has been able to provide their business for private customers throughout the entire state of Maryland from referrals and additional opportunities from local veterans organizations.
Any advice for managing a team?
AMS takes prides in our top-level service for our customers and being a top dealer for the state of Maryland for Bruno Independent Living Aids but we have only been able to provide that top level service because of our chair lift installers and professional technicians on our team. They have been employees at AMS that have employed for over 20 years and have continued to work for AMS to this day. That is a testimony to the great work environment that is created at AMS. We are located in Dundalk, MD off North Point Blvd and have employed veterans since 1999. One of our greatest achievements in the fact that AMS employs veterans who get the opportunity to serve the needs of other veterans.
