We were lucky to catch up with Josh Hodgins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Josh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I started making television in 1997. Shortly after I became homeless (not related). The only thing that kept me going was the art. I went all in and started to work full time in the industry. I worked steady for 23 years before I finally took a break. What I learned while working is that the industry is insufferable. I hated the games, politics, attitudes. I found myself falling in to all of it and hated who I had become. I decided to leave and it took years for me to start making movies again. Now I focus on making cool stories with cool people and I don’t worry about money at all. If I don’t like what you or your movie stand for, I’m not in. Period. Because of that, I have found a great group of people and have had the privilege of working with them and they also have re-inspired me and my passion for film.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started making a sketch comedy show in 1997. It aired in the Pacific Northwest and won me several awards. I then produced an independent television show and got it syndicated nationwide. That launched my career. I spent the next decade and half working on films. Some of my own and some others. I currently am producing/directing a feature. I have another ready to be released and am in pre-production on another nationwide show. My first priority is my family and being a dad/husband. I try to work around my personal life first. I don’t rush, and I love being able to share my art with my family.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I always try to lead by example. My attitude is “If I’m not getting what I want from them, then I’m not leading them there.” It’s always on me. Not them.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I have been through a lot in my life. I’m happy to have an outlet that allows me to possibly connect with others who might feel the same way I do. I want them to know that they’re not alone.
