We recently connected with Greg O’Connor and have shared our conversation below.
Greg, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on is a personal song, “Through Your Eyes” which I wrote for my fiancé Kevin Sikorski for our upcoming wedding. Kevin is a highly regarded and sought after photographer who has a creative mind for the visual arts. About a year and a half ago, we were visiting Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford CT. I was attempting to take a photo of the estate and surrounding gardens. Kevin quickly repositioned my hands to get a better angle of the shot. I thought to myself “If I could see the world through your eyes.” This was the inspiration of the song which took on a deeper meaning as we got closer. The song is really about being able to “mirror” your partner in order to have better communication empathy and understanding into their way of thinking.
The song is meaningful to me because it is not only deeply personal but it also speaks to any relationship between two people.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Los Angeles based composer, songwriter and producer who writes scores for Films, TV shows and songs for visual media and recording artists.
I am most proud of coming to Los Angeles with $28 to my name, a trunk full of clothes, three keyboards and a small computer. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to create a lasting business that has been very rewarding. As I have gained more experience over time, I have become more contemplative and reflective with my music. This allows me to have a deeper understanding of what is at the root of a storyline. This insight is very helpful with my scoring and songwriting projects. I am now taking that experience into my personal artist projects. This leads me here today to chat about my new single “Through Your Eyes” which was released on May 23, 2025. You can learn more about me at gregoconnor.com.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal, in the beginning, was to simply put myself out there in all ways, trying to create a musical path for myself. One small victory led to more small victories over a long period of time. As I became more developed as a musician, a storyteller and a composer, I became more eager to choose projects and collaborators that were in line with my artistic vision. The goal at this juncture is to work on meaningful projects that speak about personal relationships and visual media projects that are smart and insightful. My personal artist songs are mostly about my own life experiences.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I learned that people pleasing does not lead to great art. It is tempting to want to please everyone. One guy says “turn that up…” and another says “turn that down…” and you just turn it somewhere in the middle, hoping that everyone will be happy. This will end up in disaster. The gate keepers will think the result is passable and you will hate it. Nobody wins.
What I have learned is that it is important to express and execute your approach with a clear and definitive point of view. Compromise is still essential when doing work for hire projects but not when you are doing your personal ones. It is important to make time to pursue your passions in order for the work stuff to have a deeper, more meaningful impact.
