Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayna Grajo.
Hi Shayna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a health and wellness copywriter with a background as a former journalist, licensed massage therapist, and university instructor of massage therapy and yoga. I love to create matchmaking messaging that converts dream audiences for creative, passionate entrepreneurs.
I’ve decided to focus my copywriting work through the liberation lens, specifically at the intersection of wellness, luxury and equity. For instance, how spas, retreat centers, holistic practitioners, and services incorporate equity or collective liberation. I am passionate about business owners, service providers, coaches, personal brands and artists who honor equitable practices in holistic health and healing arts.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely not a smooth road! Toi Smith writes, “The struggle for liberation is not linear but cyclical and generational, demanding both resilience and renewal.”
Not all health and wellness spaces are interested in bringing equity to the intersection of wellness and luxury. And not all in the space can imagine how or why.
How to see people and the planet as _not_ competing with, but equal to, profit and power. It is definitely a “struggle” in the deeply rooted sense of the word in social movements. But that also means we can fall in love with the process.
The job of the copywriter is to move others to action. Without being an “activist,” per se, storytelling and intentional words have great potential to change lives and the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a copywriter in the health and wellness niche, I specialize in website copywriting and web design virtual assistance.
I love to serve holistic practitioners, personal brands, coaches, and mindful web design agencies. Through what I call “visionary web copy,” or intentional words, I help fellow service providers convert their dream audiences into loyal clients and subscribers.
I’ve realized I want to channel my passion for equitable practices in holistic health and healing arts. It is my vision to do so…
Not all copywriters are interested in liberatory art! I’ve long admired revolutionaries and activists who’ve taken a stand through their writing and experienced exile and political asylum for it, such as Thich Nhat Hanh and Jose Rizal.
I’ve long been drawn to an arc of work connecting to collective liberation… DEI, antiracism, feminism, land back, social justice, identity work, intersectionality, community care, critical race theory, BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ identification, Indigenous sovereignty, trans and gender-equity and inclusion, anticapitalism, anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism, supporting small and local business, respecting mental health, respecting neurodiversity, anti-ableism, anti-genocide, anti-apartheid, pro-humanity, abolition, antipoverty work and global solidarity.
Any big plans?
I am soon launching a podcast called The Equitable Wellness Podcast to continue the conversation!
Part of me feels conflicted because my plan is to launch on YouTube podcasts as well as have a traditional pod. However, there is a lot of movement or conversation around de-Googling and detangling from Google and YouTube, as well as other big tech names like Meta and Apple. While I’m not sure how I far I will shift away from Google, I also believe having a presence in these platforms for marginalized voices is important.
