Today we’d like to introduce you to Fanny Nordmark.
Hi Fanny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a design director at the company Hugo & Marie in Brooklyn, New York. I am originally from Sweden where I attended Hyper Island, before landing an internship at Hugo & Marie 14 years ago, and the rest is history! I have always been interested in design and problem solving, so a path in web design felt natural to me. I gravitate towards web design that is more visually driven in combination with being a seamless user experience and that is what I found in working at Hugo & Marie, where I now oversee our design team.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Originally, I had the prejudice that web design was all about the technical side. I had not come across many companies that approached web design from an artful point of view, and when I realized you could come at it from a different angle it really clicked for me. I am equally interested in making something that is visually appealing as it is functional. I was questioning when I was in school if design was maybe not the path for me, and it wasn’t until I found likeminded people after graduating when I realized this is where all my skills can really shine.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in web experiences, often times ecommerce for luxury brands in fashion, beauty, culture. My ability to blend user experience and functionalities with brand codes is what makes my work stand out from the rest. I believe that it is equally important to tell a clear brand story as it is to provide a seamless user experience. I am proud of the fact that this very niche approach is still something that resonates with people and is appreciated, and I am also proud to be able to show people that you do not have to make something boring and cookie cutter for it to be easy for people to use.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be to really just find something that combines your skills and interests and go for that. The world of design is so broad and there truly is a place for everyone. It can be hard in the beginning, especially if you are surrounded by people that do not have your approach or it is not the most common style, but once you find your place it will be worth it. I wish I had known that starting out, there is no one way of doing something, and when you are in school for example, most people will follow the trends that are specific to that time/place, but there is so much more out there that might feel like a better fit for you.
