We recently connected with Scoobie West and have shared our conversation below.
Scoobie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
When I started Scoobie West & Company, it was just me doing hair and makeup for a ton of people on wedding day! Along the way of freelancing in the Atlanta malls, I was able to meet and work alongside so many talented hair and makeup artists. Working side by side in retail is one thing…working a wedding is a completely different story. My interview process is so unconventional. I would watch the person work; see how they treated their customers and handled product. There are three things that I look for when asking artists to join the team. 1. Talent – doing amazing hair and makeup and being able to roll with the punches
2. Efficiency and Cleanliness – being able to work fast and remain sanitary
3. Consistency – not only being able to do the last person as good as the first…but treating your last customer with the same energy as your first.
If I had to start over today, I would not change a thing…my unconventional process has invited so many talented artists to the team.

Scoobie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Scoobie West, the owner of Scoobie West & Company. We are a luxury lifestyle brand that provides hair, makeup, men’s grooming, styling and event planning services. Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I moved to Atlanta in 2005, I came here to live the dream! I was born and raised in a small town and I was moving to the big city! In 2009, when the market crashed, my entire office was laid off. I was a new homeowner, with a new car…and no job. I’d only done hair and makeup part time, so I didn’t have a large enough clientele to sustain. I worked temporary and part time jobs for almost two years, losing my home and car in the shuffle. Once I had a full time job, I began to rebuild my life. I enjoyed working in corporate, however there was no creative outlet for me. I continued doing hair and makeup and reached out to all of the amazing event planners I’d worked with, then I reached out to the concierges at the major hotels. In less than six months, I was working more than I could have ever imagined. I stopped working in corporate and started building my business, my brand.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The biggest things that have helped me build my reputation are consistency and relationships. If you consistently treat people well and provide an amazing service, they will always call on your business. If any issue arises, talk about it and work on a solution, because the relationship is worth it.
