Today we’d like to introduce you to Wyatt Poindexter.
Hi Wyatt, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my real estate career in 1996, but my path to where I am today was anything but immediate success. Before real estate, I worked for a medical company in Tulsa. Eventually, I decided to move back to Oklahoma City and joined my father, David Poindexter, in his real estate business. It was during this time that I learned the foundational skills and values that would shape my career.
Two years later, I branched out on my own, but my early years in the business were far from glamorous. I made only $600 my first year, which was a humbling experience. However, I refused to let that define me. I put in the hard work, learned everything I could, and slowly built a reputation for honesty, dedication, and perseverance.
As my career progressed, I became fascinated with unique and luxury properties. The challenge of marketing and selling these one-of-a-kind homes excited me, but breaking into the luxury market wasn’t easy. To prove myself, I took a bold risk—I listed my first luxury home for free, covering all marketing expenses out of my own pocket. I even maxed out my credit card to ensure the property was presented at the highest level. Fortunately, my efforts paid off—the home sold quickly, and the seller not only saw my capabilities but also paid me a full commission.
That experience reinforced the importance of investing in myself and my business. From that point on, I set aside a portion of every closing specifically for marketing, allowing me to continue elevating my brand and reaching a higher caliber of clientele. Over the years, my business grew organically, built on relationships, expertise, and a relentless commitment to excellence.
Now, nearly 30 years later, I specialize in selling unique and luxury homes, which I find incredibly rewarding. Every home has a story, and I take pride in presenting them in a way that showcases their distinct character and appeal. My journey in real estate has been one of perseverance, learning, and constant evolution. I’m grateful for the clients who have trusted me, the experiences that have shaped me, and the opportunity to do what I love every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth? Not at all! Real estate is a tough business, and the road to success has been anything but easy. The industry is filled with fierce competition, challenging personalities, and its fair share of difficult situations. Over the years, I’ve dealt with undermining Realtors, giant egos, con artists, theft, and greed—you name it, I’ve probably seen it.
But while those challenges can be frustrating, I’ve learned to view each one as an invaluable experience that has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Every obstacle, whether it’s a tough negotiation, a difficult client, or a deal that falls apart at the last minute, has given me the tools to become a better Realtor and a stronger person.
Beyond the business side, real estate is emotionally intense. You’re helping people make some of the biggest financial and personal decisions of their lives. Not every transaction goes smoothly, and sometimes you have to navigate difficult situations with patience, empathy, and professionalism.
Despite the challenges, I love what I do. The struggles have only made me stronger and more determined. Every day brings something new, and I thrive on the problem-solving, strategy, and relationships that come with the business. In the end, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything—because every challenge I’ve faced has helped shape the Realtor and person I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Creativity has always been a huge part of who I am. I grew up surrounded by art—both of my parents were artists, and my brother, Josh Poindexter, is an exceptional tattoo artist in OKC. Recently, I’ve rediscovered my passion for painting, and it has become an integral part of my approach to real estate marketing.
My goal has always been to create next-level marketing for my listings—something that stands out in a competitive market. I use art not just as a personal creative outlet, but as a way to elevate the way I present luxury properties. From high-quality visuals to unique content, I’m always looking for ways to separate myself from other Realtors. I’ve even started doing custom paintings for my real estate closings, adding a personal and meaningful touch for my clients.
Consistency is key in marketing, and I dedicate at least four hours every day to it. Whether it’s a social media post, a YouTube video, a blog on my website, or another creative piece of content, I believe in constantly pushing forward. Real estate is about more than just selling homes—it’s about telling a story, building relationships, and finding innovative ways to connect with buyers and sellers. For me, art and creativity are a major part of that process.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my real estate journey is to always prioritize others’ needs over my own while maintaining integrity, honesty, and respect in every interaction. Real estate is not just about transactions—it’s about relationships, trust, and long-term connections.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of being extremely selective when hiring team members or working with other agents. Experience has taught me that red flags, no matter how small, should never be ignored. I’ve dealt with the challenges that come from hiring the wrong people—whether it was greed, drama, or a lack of professionalism—and those experiences have reinforced the importance of surrounding myself with people who align with my values.
After years of managing a real estate team, I ultimately made the decision to go back to being a solo agent. While this means I may not have the same level of production as before, I have gained something far more valuable—peace of mind. I no longer have the stress of managing others, and I can fully focus on what I do best: delivering exceptional service, creating top-tier marketing, and maintaining the high standards that have defined my career.
At the end of the day, success isn’t just about numbers—it’s about the quality of work, the relationships built, and the reputation maintained. Staying true to my values and keeping my focus on integrity and service has been the key to long-term success in this industry.
