Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie.
Hi Katie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in a small town called Ringgold, Georgia. It’s best known for where Dolly Parton got married in the 60’s. I grew up in the church, climbing trees, and running the streets. As an only child, I’ve always relied on my imagination to keep me company so it makes sense that I became a writer. I moved to Brooklyn in my early 20s and have built a community here that I absolutely adore. During the pandemic, I began working with clinicians and writing in the mental health field. As someone who sometimes struggles to climb out from behind anxiety, it’s been an education and a pleasure to be creative in this space.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A smooth road sounds like kind of a snooze, doesn’t it? I think the greatest thing about the human experience is that we are given the opportunity to hold both gut-wrenching despair and spellbinding joy. Like most everyone I know, my road has been full of potholes, but I’m incredibly fortunate to have a support system that has always shown up and gotten me through.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a freelance writer and voice over artist based in Brooklyn, New York. My personal essays have been published in outlets including Business Insider, HuffPost, Newsweek, Elle, and Glamour. I’m the editorial lead for a mental health company where I create guided meditations and grounded exercises for kids and their families.
