Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe T. Johnson.
Hi Joe T. , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Joe T. Johnson, and I’m a London-based indie rock artist with a ‘new wave’ twist. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of performing at some of London’s most iconic venues, including Old Blue Last, Jaguar Shoes, and 93 Feet East, where my band and I have headlined sold-out shows. My music has also been featured on BBC London, with BBC Introducing naming one of my tracks as ‘Track of the Week.’ My debut EP went on to achieve nationwide success through Rough Trade Records, solidifying my connection to London’s thriving indie scene.
I grew up listening to bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, The Stone Roses, The Smiths, and Bob Dylan—artists who inspired me to write songs of my own. I developed my craft in high school and college, focusing on songwriting and eventually forming a band that went on to achieve national success.
Before the band, though, I started out playing small theaters across the country with just my acoustic guitar. It was a traditional, almost old-fashioned way to begin, but it gave me invaluable experience as a performer. I remember sharing dressing rooms with dancers, poets, and other musicians it was such a vibrant and inspiring time. I was only 16, traveling and playing big shows, and looking back, it was an incredible introduction to the world of music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a bumpy road full of ups and downs, personal struggles, and moments of doubt. But through it all, I’ve stayed positive and committed to my dream. I promised myself that I would see this journey through to the end, no matter the challenges.
Like many musicians, I’ve faced the struggle of trying to stand out in an industry overflowing with talent, making it difficult to carve out my own space. The sheer volume of content being released every day means that not everything will break through, and that can be frustrating. Self-doubt and the fear of rejection are also constant battles putting yourself out there creatively is daunting, and facing criticism isn’t always easy. On top of that, independent artists don’t always get the recognition they hope for, which can be discouraging.
Despite these challenges, my passion for music keeps me going. Every struggle has shaped me into the artist I am today, and I’m grateful for the journey no matter how unpredictable it may be.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a London-based indie musician creating a nostalgic blend of indie rock with a ‘new wave’ twist. My music is rooted in storytelling and melody, drawing inspiration from the classic sounds of bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, The Stone Roses, and The Smiths while bringing a fresh, modern edge.
One of my proudest achievements was playing Glastonbury Festival a moment that felt like a true milestone in my career. It was something I had always dreamed of, and standing on that stage was a surreal and unforgettable experience.
What sets me apart is my ability to capture a sense of nostalgia while keeping my music fresh and relevant. I strive to create songs that feel timeless, blending raw energy with heartfelt lyrics, and building a deep connection with my audience through both my recordings and live performances.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about London is its architecture it provides the perfect backdrop for manifesting dreams. The city’s music scene and rich history are also a constant source of inspiration, and the fashion culture adds to its creative energy. London has given me a sense of grounding, which has been important for both my personal and artistic growth.
If there’s one thing I like least, it’s how fast-paced and overwhelming it can be at times. While the energy of the city is exciting, it can also be relentless, making it hard to slow down and take a breath. But in the end, London’s vibrancy and opportunities far outweigh the challenges, and it continues to shape me as an artist.
