Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Nilsson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my online fitness business in the year 2000, back when the only real option was dial-up.
I had been doing in-person personal training for a number years and wanted to try and reach more people who may not have otherwise been able to afford to work with a trainer.
To accomplish this, I had to bootstrap everything… including learning how to code HTML as well as learning marketing from scratch.
Within a few months, I managed to get a few clients that worked with and achieved really good results with.
However, I soon discovered that I was still trading time for money… plus, there were serious limitations training people online due to low bandwidth. I couldn’t see what my clients were doing via video. The capability just wasn’t there.
So I decided to write my first book… The Best Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of. And sold that online instead of training people.
It was so successful that I realized this was the way I should go.
At this point, 24 year later, I’ve written more than 25 books on weight training and exercise and still sell training information online to this day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. After 8 months of work, I finally made $7 (for an ad in my newsletter at the time). Then when I saw what it was for, I had to refund it because the product was garbage!
And when I launched my first book, my webhost at the time decided that I was spamming people and shut down my site for hours, until I could show that I wasn’t.
I learned a lot of lessons from those things, including not to compromise my integrity for money and to make sure and plan my launches better!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BetterU, Inc.?
My company is an online fitness education company, essentially. I create weight training programs, books, videos and articles with the goal of bringing innovative solutions to common training problems.
I specialize in unique movements and programs….things that are very different from standard practices, but all science-based and targeted for specific results.
For example, my most recent program, Return To Prime, is designed to reset your “muscle clock” back 20 years by training the underlying physiology of the body to help support muscle mass rather than directly targeting the muscle itself.
This is a completely different approach than anyone else takes.
That is very representative of my brand.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson is to talk to people and treat people like you’d want to be treated yourself… not only with customer service but with how you impart knowledge.
They’re going through struggles, just like everybody else.
And becoming a trusted source of information rather than simply somebody trying to sell them something is a BIG difference maker.
