Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Grant.
Hi Edward, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I think my love for photography started when I owned a digital compact camera as a teenager, using it to document moments of my life. My love for photography grew when I borrowed my RA’s camera to use it to shoot a short film. When I started to use it to take photos, I begin to like it more and more to the point I started using to take photos of people and events around campus. My photography was getting attention that led me to a photography internship.
After college I started trying out all genre’s of photography but Portraiture was the one I was drawn too. I started to practice with friends, co workers, and eventually started to reach out to aspiring models and signed models.
Once I got more experience with shooting portraiture. I started to create a website of my work and use it promote myself to get clients. My style of photography was giving clients an editorial like images at affordable prices.
When I’m not shooting with clients and I’m constantly involving myself to do photo projects where I have free reign. A select few images from my projects were published on magazines and Vogue Italia.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My photography journey was not a smooth road. There was so much had to learn about the principles, the function and the business of the art form. I did not go to school for it, so I had to learn about it online, YouTube university, and also trial and error. I made many mistakes on the way but I feel that was the only way to learn.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Writer, Author, and Photographer.
When it comes to writing, I like to write short stories, poems, haikus, and novellas. My stories contain elements of Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy.
As a photographer I am known for my unique portraiture work, my editorial projects and the creative short films attached them.
What I’m most proud of is the publication of my novella, “The Lost Forest.” It was my first book I had ever self-published and it was a story that took me 15 years to finish. Coinciding with the release of my book, I created a short film about the story to promote it. The same short film was later submitted to the Austin Micro Film Festival where not only it was accepted to be played in the festival, it won the best Horror Short Film.
What sets me apart from others is how I get my ideas. They come from multiple sources such as the books I read, the shows I watched as a kid, seeing random human interaction, and hearing other people stories. The biggest source is my imagination. I pretty much live inside my imagination a great portion of the time, due to my love for escapism. But when I return, I always return with a concept, a plot to a story or a name of a character. I obsessively think of these ideas until they become concrete.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
My biggest lesson is there is no such thing as failing when pursuing your dreams
