Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Evans.
Hi Monique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the mental health field as a therapist and a private-practice business owner has been shaped by personal experiences, community, and mentorship. Like many, my path hasn’t been linear—I started as an undergraduate student, navigating the challenges of school while discovering my passion for understanding human relationships and resilience.
I had a gap year between undergrad and graduate school. In that time, I worked full-time in retail and did an internship as an intake interviewer. I realized that my calling was in social work, leading me back to school to pursue my Master’s of Social Work degree. The decision wasn’t just about advancing my education—it was about deepening my ability to support others in meaningful ways. Through my studies and experiences, I found my niche: helping people undo toxic relationships, whether with others or within themselves.
My goal was to eventually open a private practice where I could see clients on my own time. On the night of my 30th birthday, two close friends and colleagues gifted me my first year of malpractice insurance. This was a sign of confirmation that I needed to get started and others also believed in my vision. My practice which is almost five years old now is a space where individuals can reclaim their sense of self, heal from harmful dynamics, and step into healthier, more fulfilling connections. This work is deeply personal to me because I know how transformative it can be when someone is given the right tools and support to break free from the past.
My story is still unfolding, but every step I take reaffirms my purpose: to create a space where people feel seen, empowered, and capable of rewriting their own narratives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not been smooth to be completely honest, but I would not change it. Every challenge has shaped me into the person I am today. Returning to school while balancing life’s responsibilities was not easy. I have learned that growth happens in the moments we push forward despite uncertainty.
One of my biggest struggles has been navigating the unknown—figuring out how to carve out my place in this field, managing self-doubt, and trusting that my experiences, even the difficult ones, are part of a bigger purpose. As a first-generation college graduate, I didn’t have a blueprint for success, but I’ve learned to build my own. There were times when financial stress, imposter syndrome, and the weight of balancing work, school, and personal life felt overwhelming. But I kept reminding myself why I started—to help others heal, break free from old patterns, and build healthier relationships. This work really starts with ourselves. Holding onto that purpose has carried me through every difficult moment and reminding myself of my “why.”
The beauty of struggle is that it teaches us to adapt, to persevere, and to grow in ways we never expected. My journey is not about having all the answers—it is about learning, evolving, and showing up, even when the path is not clear. And if there is one thing I have learned, it is that every setback, every challenge, and every doubt has only made the dream of helping others even more meaningful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
@therapywithmo is more than just a therapy practice—it is a space where people can unlearn what no longer serves them and step into healthier, more fulfilling relationships with themselves and others. I specialize in helping individuals, couples, and families navigate toxic relationship patterns, with a particular focus on healing mother-daughter dynamics.
What sets my practice apart is the blend of deep empathy, cultural awareness, and direct, insightful feedback that I bring to each session. As a first-generation African-American woman from a Jamaican family, I understand the complexities of navigating multiple cultural expectations, spoken and unspoken rules, and the emotional weight that can come with them. This lived experience allows me to connect with my clients in a way that feels both validating and transformative.
I take pride in creating a space where therapy-seekers feel safe, appropriately challenged, and supported as they work through some of their most delicate relationships—whether with parents, romantic partners, or even themselves. My approach is all about getting to know my clients deeply, exploring with them the necessary shifts they need to make, and helping them take actionable steps toward lasting change.
What I want others to know about @therapywithmo is that healing is possible. You don’t have to stay stuck in cycles that harm you. With the right guidance and support, you can rewrite your story, build healthier connections, and move forward with clarity and confidence. If you are ready to do the work, I’m here to help.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
In addition to my work with clients, I have created the Undoing Toxic Blog. Every Sunday, I share weekly insights on life, relationships, and personal reflections. It is a space where I explore the complexities of human connection and offer thoughtful guidance for those seeking to break free from harmful patterns and build healthier lives.
I am also passionate about extending these conversations beyond the therapy room. I regularly participate in podcast features, speaking engagements, and presentations, where I discuss topics like undoing toxic relationships, cultural identity, and emotional healing. These platforms allow me to connect with a wider audience and share practical tools for growth and transformation.
At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to helping people feel seen, heard, and empowered to create positive change. Whether through therapy, writing, or speaking, my mission is to provide a compassionate and honest perspective that encourages others to heal and thrive. If my work resonates with you, I invite you to explore the Undoing Toxic Blog or connect with me through my practice.
