We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nnaemeka Keke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nnaemeka below.
Alright, Nnaemeka thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I started my music career back in 2014 with my very first cover song to fetty wap Trap Queen which was titled no love in the street . After A year I moved on to the United States “Atlanta Georgia “ where I continued my music career fully in 2017 when I released Grind featuring Michael I-zayah . After the song was released I started getting hate comments from fans saying I’m trying to adapt to the American culture music knowing fully where I’m from which doesn’t fit me . I never claimed to be American and I never denied my culture it’s wasn’t just my style of music even thou I was from Africa doesn’t mean I have to make African music . After a year with each song I released the hate speech kept growing which made me to go into depression back in 2018 and away from the Music scene for a long time . After a year I returned back to the music industry with a brand new single in 2020 August and also changed my Artist name from Yung Rick to Emezzy and I learned so far while I was away from the music scene you don’t have to listen to the hate comments or let it hurt your feelings but instead let it be your motivation to do better and prove them wrong .
Nnaemeka , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Nnaemeka Mathew Keke (born 17 February 1997), popularly known as Emezzy, is an American/Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter. His stage name EMEZZY is derived from his original name Nnaemeka. Emezzy is a self-taught musician best known for songs inspired by a combination of his Nigerian roots and Neo-soul love. Emezzy is regarded as one of the hip-hop genre’s most prolific artists. Some of his popular songs are Foreign Ride, Murder Case, Body and Tribute to Marcel.Back then I used to rap in the class on our free period and everyone was feeling it so After high school in 2014 I decided to jump onto fetty wap Trap Queen instrumental back then it was lit and I had to do some freestyle to it . Am really proud of what have accomplished over the past few years , the journey wasn’t easy but I never gave up because I was determined. I own my own record label today because I was determined to do it and improve myself too .
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
It’s funny how back then I was so determined to get a record label deal because I believed they would change my life for the better and my music would start popping. If only I knew what I know now I wouldn’t be chasing after this record label’s. I had to make my research and I had to invest in myself to archive what I have now . I said to my self you don’t need no label to make it in the music industry I still remember how I stayed up doing research on how to start a label . Today it’s like a dream to me
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I had one goal and that was to make good music globally and own my own record label to be able to help young talented artist who wanna make it in the music industry too . Music has always been a passion for me and I would love myself and every hard working young Talented Artist to be able to win bet or Grammy Awards .
