Today we’d like to introduce you to Star Spann.
Hi Star, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In my last interview with CanvasRebel I talked about how I first got into music, But here I’ll share about how I became a singer. I first started singing when I was 12 years old. I lacked any sort of natural vocal talent, but loved music deeply and asked my parents to put me in voice lessons. Truly, my main motivation was that I desperately wanted to sound like Cass Elliot. I began working with a wonderful voice teacher named Mariah Snow. After four months of lessons I had my first voice recital, I had such horrible stage fright and still lacked any sort of natural vocal ability, that my performance was disastrous. My parents asked my teacher about pulling me out of lessons that week. Mariah insisted that my parents keep me in lessons for another four months and let her work. Four months later, I booked a lead role in my first musical. So much of my life and career has been brought about by one person taking a chance on me, opening a door so I can walk through. I could write a book on the many wonderful mentors who’ve taken me under their wings in the music world to help find my footing. I’ve been singing for over a decade now, I live in NYC as a full-time musician working on my debut album and get to live out all my childhood dreams because that first door opened for me. My voice for the past few years has become my meal-ticket, my main form of income, all because someone shaped it into life and brought out its potential. Singing is my life, my world, and my main love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a full-time musician has been a messy hard-road with a lot of heartache and fear. At the same time, it’s the most rewarding job in the world for me. When I see a crowd singing along to a song I wrote, or get a message about how my music has touched someone, it makes every bad day and rough gig worth it. While I’ve always known I wanted to sing, it took some time and misdirections in finding in which way I would. I tried Musical Theater, Opera, and even did a stint for a couple years as a children’s party performer all to sing. But when I started writing my own music, it changed everything. The road is never smooth when following your dreams, but if you hold on tight, it’s well worth the ride.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer-songwriter based in NYC, originally from Lorton, Virginia. My music is a mix of old 1960s style folk-rock, blues, and country. I write music that tells stories, either my own, stories of other peoples, or cautionary tales of today’s issues. I’m most known for my songs about women’s issues. I was playing at a cafe recently and got introduced as “This is Star Spann, she writes great angry feminist songs!”. Which I take as a huge compliment. I write about the things I’m passionate about and my upcoming album is full of songs about women’s rights, poverty, love, loss, and happiness. I just released a song called “Standing at the Crossroad Blues” which is about the music industry and the slipping slope of making deals with the devil. It’s based on the lore of famous blues guitarist Robert Johnson and my producers Ray Rubio and John Gleason at Whispers Only Records worked hard to make it a rocking blues record I’m very proud of. It’s available to stream everywhere now, and my album will be out September 2025.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Love and faith matter most to me. I believe that you put into the universe is brought back to you triple-fold. The love you pour into the world, people, places, art, the more love will be poured into you. Love is power, and that power can do just about anything you set your mind on. Faith follows those same guidelines, the faith you have in the world, people, places, art, and the things not seen, the more faith will be placed on you. What you put out is what you get. So you must have love and faith in the higher powers that be and the things not seen to create the reality you want. Life isn’t as complicated as we make it out to be, a lesson I’ve come to realize is that all of it can simply boil down to love and faith.
