Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Furman.
Hi Sophie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi there, my name is Sophie (she/her) and I started out drawing up a storm as a child, then decided to try out illustration a few years ago. After much learning, it is now my profession, and I draw and write for newspapers and publications, children’s books, and companies. I love dogs, so draw a lot of them too, as well as diverse characters, fun portraits, and I take up lots of projects that have a mission that I believe in.
A couple of years ago, I even hired my very first employee – my small, pup studio assistant named Cookie! Yes, she gets paid in treatos and cuddles!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One main struggle was starting small… I knew that I had to learn lots, improve my style, start with small steps. I had a tough childhood, so that was something that I had to surmount as well!
One of my struggles was also time management and planning. As a solution, I have lots of to-do lists running all the time, and set up everything to be easy and accessible so that I can use my time effectively. One method I like is using a Happy Planner, which is an analog, paper planner that is fun and easy to use.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart is my love of craft and passion for illustration, and delivering the very best, and cutest illustration to my clients. As mentioned previously, I do a lot of dog and children’s illustrations (or the two together!), and am also known for my portraits.
I am most proud of all of the lovely clients and their illustrations that I’ve done. It feels so good to see your work out in the world where people can connect to the drawing and hopefully therefore brighten their day by so looking.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Brooklyn and the city that it’s in, New York City, is a great place to chase your dream, and is very artistic to boot. There are so many things to do, people to meet, and drawing to be done. I just wish that there was enough time to do it all!
