Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Posthumus.
Hi Sam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been drawing things for as long as I can remember and it has always been a place that I can go to escape. I had never thought about a career in visual art until after my daughter was born. I would paint custom shoes and shirts for her and that lead to quite a few people telling me that I should pursue selling my creations. About a decade later, paired with some evolving, here I am.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think 99% of full time artists will tell you that it is definitely not a smooth road. Being a one-person band rarely is. I struggle with the same ups and downs that all artists encounter throughout their journey. You have to have low points to truly appreciate the highs and I try to keep that perspective.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I generally create using bright colors with bold, distinctive black outlines. I think at this point that is a signature of the majority of my work. I don’t create “traditional” fine art but I’ve also never set out to or wanted to; there are plenty of artists that do that already. I think what sets my art apart from others is that it is truly my own style. You may see hints of my influences but it is still very much my own.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Above all my family matters the most to me. My wife has been so incredibly supportive, understanding, and encouraging throughout my art career. I don’t want all of that to be for nothing. My daughter is growing up to be a wonderful human and I want to be the best example for her that I can be too.
